Killing for food is wrong, should I be vegetarian?!

Question: The other day, the "El Polo Loco" ad on TV showed chickens frying on the grill. But it was the entire chicken body. It looked really gross, and kind of sad (do you know which one I am talking about?). My mom said, "Ew. Gross. Why cant they be life KFC and just show the chickens parts, but already cooked?" I agreed....but then I realized, no matter how you look at it, and no matter how much you try to hide it, they were all alive once. I could eat a whole bucket of chicken wings. I seriously could eat a whole bucket of wings QUICK. But taking a life? I mean, I know we have to kill animals for food, but I could eat so many bodies, so many creatures that once walked the earth, and not even THINK about it. This made me sad, and a little creeped out. I think I want to become vegetarian. What do you think? Are there any websites that have recipes or something I could stick to?

that's a lot of burgers.

i went on holiday to china and we ate goat. we were with some chinese tour guide geezers in the middle of nowhere and they rode off on their horses, bought a goat from a village and came back to our camp with this trussed up cutesy little white goat.

we watched them slaughter it, skin it, gut it and cook it. i thoguht it would make me want to be a veggie, but it didn't, it just gave me more respect for the animal and more of an understanding of what eating meat really means.

i still eat meat now, but i feel like i'm a bit more justified cos i never pretend that i'm not eating soemthing that was alive once.

this programme is quite good, it's about why free range (not veggie!) is better for the chickens:

I have a simple logic..those animals are bred for cooking....they wd nt even exist if we din have to eat them

Killing for food is not wrong!! And no you shouldn't be a vegitarian!! God intended us to eat meat!!

if you want!!!

if you don't eat meat you'll get anemic

I personally think this is a matter of taste over morality. If you enjoy eating meat products and it doesn't gross you out, then I say screw the moral part. You don't have to personally kill what you eat, so why worry about it? You're just psyching yourself out, quite needlessly, imho.

well if you think killing for food is wrong, then yes, yes you should be vegan. Oh and prepare for tofu and soybean related foods.

Vegetarianism isn't a diet. It's a lifestyle choice. There's no reason for you to feel confused or hungry - in fact, you should feel better and full! You can typically eat more than you would eating meat, as you eat a looot of vegetables!

There are countless websites, books, and cookbooks that can help you on your journey.

Yes, think of it as a journey.

The first, and most critical, step is realizing the consequences of eating meat - every time you eat meat, a poor animal has suffered and died for that bite. It's a lot to swallow, isn't it? When I decided it was time for me to start on my journey to vegetarianism, I had been feeling guilty about eating meat for a few months (no help from my sister, a strict vegan who kept showing me videos from Peta). Once you know the effects that eating meat has, you really won't want to eat meat. Really.

A good second step would be to read as much as you can on the vegetarian diet (that is diet as in what you eat, not the counting calories type). Figure out what kind of food you want to eat - and make a shopping list! A good way to do this is to make a meal plan for your first week, snacks included. Then just buy the food you want to be eating that week!

Step three is to experiment. Play around with your food. Don't just eat salad, don't just eat grains. You need to eat a balanced diet, and keep it varied. If you get bored with what you're eating, you'll give in to your desires for hamburgers, chicken strips, etcetera, a lot easier than you would if you enjoyed the vegetarian meals you were eating!

Don't forget, you can get a lot of soy based meat-like products, such as "ground beef", "chicken breasts", "chicken nuggets", "meat balls", and so on. Those really help when you're new to being a vegetarian, as it makes the transition a lot easier.

Oh, and step four? The fourth step in the journey to being a vegetarian is to not beat yourself up if you slip up and eat meat. It will most likely happen, and when it does, remind yourself of why you want to be a vegetarian and get back onto the veggie train.

As for websites I know about, I lost most of my bookmarks unfortunately. The veggie ones I currently have are as follows:

Good luck on your journey!

P.S. - Make sure to talk to your doctor about any supplements or vitamins she feels you should be taking now that you have changed your diet. You will need to take B12 (found in most multi vitamins or multi B vitamins), since B12 only occurs in meat products.

If you decide that killing to nourish yourself to meet your natural dietary requirements (humans are omnivores, no question) is wrong, then you need to also stop killing for even worse reasons...

Like for clothing/stuff. Hundreds of silkworms have to be boiled alive to make a silk shirt. Cows have to die for a nice pair of pumps, a purse, or a belt. Old animals are boiled into glue. You don't need these things for health, so it's pretty morally reprehensible to kill just to have these nice things.

Like for pest control. If you get an ant/roach/rodent infestation, in your home, you pretty much should live with it because killing for aesthetics and convenience is much more morally reprehensible.

Where do you draw the line? Chickens and cows are cuddly and ants/roaches/silkworms/rodents are gross? Aren't they all life? Even if one wants to argue that cows and chickens are more sentient, the argument does not hold against rodents. In addition, when you kill insects, you kill thousands at a time in vicious chemical attacks and poisonings. Have you ever seen a victim of a chemical attack/poisoning? Just because an insect does not have an expressive face to a human, it does not mean it does not suffer what is commonly regarded as one of the most agonizing ways to die. And how do you weigh killing thousands of semi-sentient things against a sentient thing? What's the equivalency?

Honestly, I personally think killing is wrong. I make every effort to not kill things, and most spiders I find in the house, I capture and release outside. However, sometimes killing is necessary. Like in the case of nutrition, that is not something I compromise, nor is it out of the norm of what is done by other predators in the "circle of life". However, I don't kill indiscriminately or waste what is killed (food, stuff, etc.) so the sacrifice of a life is not in vain.

People have been killing animals for food since the beginning of time. That is why God created animals. If you choose to become a vegetarian that is your prerogative. I just hope you really like vegetables of all kinds because it will take alot of veggies to get you all the protein and calcium you need to be healthy.

Killing for food is not wrong. Killing for more than you need is wrong.

Where's Maggie?

Killing for food is not wrong, who on earth told you that?

Killing for food ,is also killing and killing is a sin and it need to pay back soonest or latest.

the fist part of your question: "Killing for food is wrong...." is already wrong so any conclusion drawn from that is equally erroneous..

Since people crave meat, it's obviously a natural instinct. We're omnivores.

It sounds as if you had an epiphany--"When I eat chicken, I am eating the body of an animal that was once alive"--and then got blocked from acting on it (I'm channeling Carol J. Adams here).

There are veggie burgers, veggie sausages, veggie stir-fry strips, veggie deli slices, veggie crumbles, veggie nuggets--keep trying different brands untill you find what you like.

I will point out that being vegetarian--and especially vegan--means being very disciplined. I carry food with me--mostly energy bars, sometimes veggie jerky, and a chocolate bar or two--just in case a craving hits.

I will also point out that if you don't feel vegetarianism works for you, reducing your meat consumption is also a step in the right direction. And avoiding fast food places is even better.

Thats really for you to decide. If it really upsets u that much then don't eat it, but don't force yourself into a diet that you're not going to enjoy or find easy its obviously not meant for you.

U shudn't try to ignore where your food comes from , its good to know

some quick replys to the reasons from people who told you not to:

just because we raised the animal to kill it doesnt justify killing it. what it does is create unnessisary strains on the enviroment by having artificially high numbers of certain animals such as chickens and cows.

you wont get anemic if you eat a balanced vegetarian diet.

I dont know if you are christian or not, but dont let anyone else's interpretation of the bible effect your decision, if there is a God, she is the only one who will judge you. And if there isnt a god, then you have your own morals to live up to, and those morals sound pretty clear about this.

What you state here is exactly the reason many people decide to go vegetarian. I think you need to look up some vegetarian sites on the internet and see that there are loads of options out there as a vegetarian. It doesn't have to feel like a "diet". I eat vegetarian and at the end of the day I feel full, and I appreciate the fact that I was able to rise above some of the things that make it difficult for vegetarians in our society and stick to my beliefs. Seriously, it's not as hard as you may imagine. Your thoughts in your question are good ones keep questioning yourself and the things around you. Just listen to what your heart tells you!

I'm beginning tho think you are a psycho... making up stories about a child predator and a family that doesnt care...now you are confused about killing for food? You need help. If you cant get yourself help.. go about being a vegetarian.. might as well go full-in on the loony bin.
God gave us dominion over animal top use for food. To not partake is a sin against god...Nutcases like Carrie Underwood are gonna go to hell for being vegetarians
