Vegetarian is a blanket term. It covers the 5 levels. There's none of this "pollo pesce semi" crap. Five. That's it.
NO vegetarians eat meat. Fish and chicken are meat.
Lacto vegetarians - milk, no eggs.
Ovo vegetarians - eggs, no milk.
Lacto-ovo vegetarians - eggs and milk
Strict vegetarians - strictly plant based diet. Some call it a vegan DIET (which is NOT the same as being vegan) No animal products. No dairy, no eggs, no honey, nothing animal-derived.
Vegans - plant-based diet (as above). Vegan implies moral concern for animals and extends to lifestyles as well. We avoid animal products in our consumables such as shampoo, make up, cleaning products, and so on. No leather, wool, suede, silk, and so on, and we avoid animal testing.
Spinach or other leafy green vegetables. Beans. Iceberg lettuce is devoid of nutritive value; it simply has water and crunch.
ummmm.............last I knew, fish was considered meat.
Hmm. First of all, if your friend doesn't eat meat "of any kinds" than fish wouldn't do it either. And I have never heard of serving fish at BBQ! Spinach does have a lot of iron, but you can't put it on the grill...there are plenty of meat substitutes out there that have iron and protein in them. Like the Boca Burgers or MorningStar Farms varieties. You can make your own veggie burgers using TVP (textured vegtable protein) or make your own (or buy) seitan - made with vital wheat gluten.
Green leafy veggies are the best non-meat source for iron.
make a veggie burger
I've been a vegetarian for years and I am healthy, anyone can do it, you just gotta make sure you get a balanced diet. To replace the protein, there are lots of soy products you can choose from, you can also eat rice and beans, or any legume with grains makes a complete protein. Spinach, brocolli, and dark leafy greens often have a lot iron. You can take an iron supplement if you're really worried, but I eat a lot of fruits and veggies and whole grains and I have excellent iron in my blood.
Your friend's not even a vegetarian, let alone vegan if he/she eats fish.
Iron is found in tons of things. Including fish. Here's something from wikipedia:
Good sources of dietary iron include red meat, fish, poultry, lentils, beans, leaf vegetables, tofu, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, potatoes with skin, bread made from completely whole-grain flour, molasses, teff and farina. Iron in meat is more easily absorbed than iron in vegetables.
i enjoy the taste of seared flesh. i'd eat human if it was legal. i really don't understand how fish aren't considered meat though... they are living creatures.
Jesus. All you people who are so obsessive about the word "vegetarian" need to get some perspective. And a life.
Make a veggie burger or two, thats easy. Spinach, squash, beans, and broccoli all have iron.
