How come people are vegans?!

Question: Do vegans not eat dairy because of health reasons, or do they think there's something wrong with it?

Apologies to all those that have seen this post before, i seem to copy it every day.....but the milk question comes up every day so the answer is still relavent.

There are lots of ethical isseus around milk that vegetarians should be aware of, let alone vegans.

i own an arable farm in amongst dairy and beef farms, seeing them approx every other day because we visit them to see about rescue Jerseys. The farms I'm talking about here are nationally recognised as being the best in the industry, they have viewing gallaries and consistantly win awards so we are not talking about the average or less, we are talking about the BEST here. And this is UK farms which are recognised as having the best husbandry in the world.

Artificial incemination every year
Cows would naturally calve every 2-3 years. Dairy farms artificially inceminate them every 11 months. This causes excessive stress on the cows body, increses the chance of prolapse and generally "wears them out"

Hormone enriched feed
The feed they are given is enriched with artificial growth foods. these are generally made with cattle meat protiens.

Bribe/feed caged carousels
These suck. They are large rotating carousels where the cows are caged in a space where they cannot move. They have "black boxes" on thier legs which communicate with the main operating computer. They are fed just the right amount of food depending on how much milk they gave yesterday. They have added growth food if thier production drops
One person can milk about 400 cattle on a carousel so there is no time for checking the animals health - they just milk them dry and kick them out.

killing bulls, excess calves and free martins at 1 week old
All bulls are killed at 1 week old. They do not keep any back for breeding as they bring in new blood lines. In the UK we don't use dairy bull calves for veal anymore. Bull calves go to make low quality leather products such as cheap sofas.
They kill all free martins as there is a good chance they will be barren.
Strangly, they feel these animals with colostrum at birth to keep them alive, but then kill them a week later.

excess feeding to produce 60 lites of milk per day
The growth food is all designed to produce excess milk. Cows are naturally designed to produce about 15 litres. The european targets for 2009 are set at 90 litres, i don't think it need me to tell you if this is heading the right or wrong direction.

intensive rearing means low husbandry checks
As mentioned above, most automatic dairies have one milkmaid per session, thats it. I know a dairy farm with 1200 cattle and 3 employees. Tell me how they can ever check the cattle....

removing calves from mothers after colostrum feed
This is stressful, cows bawl for weeks for thier young, calling them to be fed. Obviously the calf cannot "run to mom" because its in dog food by now.

killing the cow at 7 years old
Cows can naturally live to 20 years old. Production dairy cows are killed after 4-6 births so are never kept after 7 years old.

Hope that helps.

and after all that I'm not saying its right or wrong, you make up your own mind.

Vegan people are not motivated by health. They may use it in a way that is healthier than the average person but vegan people are motivated by the suffering and well-being of other people and other animals.

Veganism doesn't have anything to do with avoiding processed or canned foods. Those are individuals' choices.
Vegan people avoid food and other products that originate in part or whole from animals.

If someone believes that an animal can be the property of a human being, they are not vegan. They may eat a vegan diet but they are not vegan unless they believe that the only owner of an animal, its body or whatever it produces is the animal itself.

Neither. Vegans believe you shouldn't consume any animal byproduct, as well as anything processed. No dairy, and no meat. Nothing processed, such as canned food.

Because they are smarter than the rest of us! Even smarter then vegetarians like me! They know veganism healthiest form of diet if done properly and not haphazard like.. the saving of animals is what the goal may be for some vegans
but not all! Vegans don't have to avoid all canned foods just the ones that contain animal origin products! Vegans don't eat anything of animal and nothing of animal origin!

Vegans do not eat, use or wear anything of animal origin because we believe that animals do not belong to us to exploit for our own whims.

Dairy cattle are kept under torturous and unnatural conditions and are slaughtered for cheap beef at a fraction of their normal life span. Males born to dairy cows are sold to the veal crates. The dairy industry (not to mention the egg industry) is every bit as cruel as raising an animal to slaughter for meat.

The elimination of animal products from the diet has health benefits (see The China Study by T. Colin Campbell) and is by far the most environmentally friendly diet choice.

Edit to add to the girl who thinks we can't eat canned food: hahahaha! I guess my lovely crockpot chili isn't vegan after all since it has two cans of tomatoes, a can of kidney beans, a can of black beans and a can of chickpeas. Who knew?

i quit eating dairy for both reasons. i think it's unhealthy and i find it disgusting what they do to the cows, and what ends up in the milk.

for my mom, she feels" Why eat the by products of meat, If I don't eat meat?" She feels healthier, stronger when she avoids dairy. She feels bogged down, congested, experiences body aches, and smelly. It weakens her immune system

They want to be a social outcast. They also think they save a few chickens.

They felt sorry for animals.

I don't eat dairy because milk is for calves. The main reason I'm vegan is because exploiting animals is wrong and imho, eating things from their bodies is gross. I believe it's also unhealthy, though. I did a research project in comparative anatomy, and from the physiology of the human body, and from the effects of various animal products, it's evident that humans are herbivores.

Wow! People became vegans for literally millions of different reasons! The main reason people go vegan instead of strict vegetarianism, is due to animal rights. Each year millions of animals are abused, tortured and killed just for some people's pleasure. Also in the process of making milk the female cows are raped and when their child is born it most likely becomes veal if it is a boy.

Another reason is because dairy is among the worst animal product for you because it is harmful to your body, and hard for humans to digest. Animal milk, especially cows can cause cancers, obesity, contribute to allergies, colic, and autism. As well going vegan can help reverse heart disease and lower cholesterol levels, as well as tons more benefits!

Another reason is due to the sick factor. Many think it is disgusting to drink milk from someone else's mom, that is from a different specie. Humans are the only animals on earth to drink milk past childhood and it is not even from their mother or specie! A lot of milk also contains pus and hormones.

Plus many more reasons!

because they choose to. vegans choose not to eat meat and dairy products either because of health reasons or more personal reasons. in a way i guess they do think there is something wrong with it, but probably only with eating it.

Personally, I'm vegan for two reasons, one outweighing the other. 1.) The American Meat and Dairy industries are a disgrace and completely unhygienic. If "free-range" and "organic" animal products existed, I'd totally eat it. I don't have a problem with the actual slaughtering of animals for food, it's a natural progression in the food chain. However, the process before slaughtering is absolutely disgusting. And the meat industry produces WAY more meat than Americans consume in a year! Not to mention that fact that meat is now pumped FULL of steriod, hormornes, and antibiotics and I don't wish to consume all of these toxins. The hormones in beef is even said to be related to the growing number of girls that are reaching puberty at 8 and 9 YEARS OLD, in turn putting them at risk for developing osteoperosis earlier in life. Animal by products are full of antibiotics and hormones too, along with natural morphin (ever wonder why milk is used to lull people?). It's just gross with you think about what you're ingesting and what is eventually runnign through your body. I actually had withdrawl symptoms when I stopped eating animal byproducts, which gave me proof that I had serious toxins in my body! Scary!!
The other reason I don't eat any animal byproducts is because the Meat and Dairy industries can't be trusted. Even if it says "organic" or "anitbiotic free" on the label, it's actually allowed to have up to a certain percent of tracable antibiotics present! These industries are misleading and I cannot support their tactics; they have no ethical worth.

Why are people not?
That's the real question.

Dairy... we are mammals, that's why I don't consume dairy. Simple. If you don't know what that means, then basically it means that we don't need it. Only babies do, and that milk is from their mother, not from other animals, or processed, cooked, etc.

vegans dont eat or use any animal bi products because they think it wrong and crule

im a vegan and thats 1 of my reason why

They think they are going to save the planet and the wee animals.
