Soy cheese or other cheese alternative?!

Question: I was considering trying some of the soy cheese that’s available as an alternative to regular cheese, but I am afraid I’ll end up with some that tastes really bad and will have wasted the money. Do you have any suggestions or preferences? Or some other cheese alternative would be helpful. List name brands that you like or ones to stay away from. Thank you!

the brand "follow your heart" has the best vegan cheese. My personal fave is the nacho kind. I usually find it at whole foods. IT MELTS! but the only thing is that it hardens pretty quickly.

The other brand i LOVE is tofutti. They have so many alternatives like cheese slices for sandwhiches, cream cheese, sour cream etc...

sooo yummmmy

I have tried and disliked just about every vegan soy-based cheese. I'd suggest reading ingredients labels if you do venture out to try a few brands out because some contain casein or other non-vegan ingredients.

I had some luck making my own ricotta cheese substitute from tofu, here's a recipe:

This ricotta is not exactly convincing on its own but when made into a lasagna recipe, it's almost indistinguishable from the real thing (then again though I haven't had real ricotta in years so I might have forgotten!)

There are some companies that you can order from by mail, including a vegan gorgonzola that I saw an ad for in the VegNews magazine I subscribe to. I haven't ordered anything offline yet but I might give that gorgonzola a shot.

Edit: Oh, I forgot about Tofutti, their cream cheese is good. I was thinking more along the lines of mozzarella or cheddar stand-ins.

why????
they all have casein, which is from milk anyways, why not just have the real thing.plus they are loaded with MSG

edit
those above cheeses as their main ingredient, besides water,is hydrogenated oils.soy and canola, both not good.

Follow Your Heart (mozzarella) tastes amazing when melted... I use it for grilled cheese, nachos, pizza, etc. It doesn't taste very good unmelted, though.

I've had Tofutti American Soy Cheese Slices in wraps and they also taste good melted.

I'd stay away from Vegan Singles and Sheese. Hope this helps.

OMG. omgomgomgomgomg.

Have you tried Cheezly? It tastes just like real cheese and melts too!. It is foodgasmic.

I like Tofutti too.

@Ol Man is back: Some soy cheeses do have casein, vegan cheeses do not have casein.

In about 5 minutes I will be eating Earth Island Moz... on my vegan pizza, along with a little Soya feta. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Casein and or whey is in lots of "lactose free" products, just like lots of margarine's, so read the ingredients before you buy.

@ole man black : the reason non of us eat "the real" stuff is because we are vegan/vegetarian, see title of this page!
