How many here really have done something to aid the welfare of animals?!
Have you donated money to help animals to be spayed/neutered?
Do you do any type of vol. work to help animals?
I guess what I am asking is how many here are walking the walk of just talking and not really doing anything personally?
Answers: Talking about have you adopted an animal from a shelter that has been abused?

Yes.
My current cat is a rescue...she turns 16 in March and I've had her for 10 years.
I also volunteer at the local animal shelter and I fostered several cats after Hurrican Katrina until their owners could come get them and take them home.
EMT
I have been a vegetarian for about 4 or 5 years, and i donate money to the animal shelter regularly.
plus i try to get involved in a lot of their fund raisers [:
i love animals and hate to see them being abused or mistreated.
Yes, taken in rescued animals as pets. Do I get an award?
I fixed 5 cats so far...
i have stopped on the road to bring lost wandering dogs back to there owners a few times.
All my pets are from homes that people no longer wanted them or cared for them. I think they appreciate having a good home.
I joined the RSPCA when I was 8
Does that count...
Be safe, be sage
Both my dogs are rescues.
I work for the shelter.
I also donate money, my time, and food to the shelter.
So yes, I walk the walk...
This past July, I adopted a cute gray kitten from the Humane Society since I know the negative outcomes of this particular shelter. I wish I could do more, such as saving chimpanzees from abusive zoos.
I've fed tons of stay cats at our old apt. It started with a few and grew to about 20. I also put out lawn chairs with towels and heating pads when it was cold. About a week ago, I found a lost dog and brought it home and called the owner. I love animals.
Love animals. Contributing member to World Wildlife Fund. I give to humane shelters. I dont go to circus featuring animals and I dont wear fur. I help out when I can. Animals rule.
I'm with you . I don't own a dog but I know buying one from a breeder kills a dog in an animal shelter
My kitten came from the shelter. My family saved a good twelve cats from the wild and spayed the mother, and one of them, we paid for his hip surgery when we discovered the poor little guy had dislocated it and couldn't jump. We found homes for them all except for him - kept that one as a friend for our shelter-kitty.
I do! I adopted a lab from a rescue center & I donate to ASCPA monthly. I also donate all collars and misc items that my dogs no longer need to the Humane Society. I always round up to the dollar when they are doing that at the pet store and buy food for the animals when there is a drive.
If I happen to catch dog food on sale and I have a coupon..then I buy it to donate to a rescue group. I've donated to the Humane Society in my city after befriending an employee and hearing, in more detail, about the wonderful services they do for animals. And most recently I came across a Yorkie, that was neglected by his owners. He was stuffed in a crate (it was tiny) for 12 hours a day, fed an inadequate diet of leftover human food, and not properly excersied. He's now a 25lbs Yorkie! I may have gotten in over my head but the lady at the shelter said they'd more than likely euthanize him because he could be at risk for health problems. Well I took him and he is a butterball and thankfully the vet said his heart healthy but he needs to weigh between 10-12 lbs. Right now he's mad that I'm not feeding him from the table but hopefully he'll lose some weight!
We have adopted dogs and cats from our local animal shelter. Have also given stray cats a warm home that came around. I found an extremely smart cat that was a stray. After finding her owner, I found out that her living situation had been awful. She used to be scared of people but always loved dogs. Now she sits comfortably in peoples laps (at her convenience).
As far as donating money goes, have probably given a little to the money jars they have in public places, but allot of my money goes for caring for the animals I have.
Having been an animal rights activist most of my life I can tell you there are many ppl who actually take action. I will admit that there are a lot of ppl who only give lip service.
Anyone who's donated to an animal charity shop or bought from one has contributed. Anyone that's kind and loving to their pets. Anyone that's put money in an animal charity tin or box. Anyone that's taken towels or blankets to their local shelter. Anyone that's ever reported finding a lost dog or cat.
I think most people have big hearts where animals are concerned and if you want the average person to do more for animals then make it possible for them in their busy daily lives.
I buy organic for the animals because I know after a life on pizza rolls and Mac Donald's I'm already screwed.
I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, and my cat would have been killed if I did not take him into my life. He was a stray, and I took him in. He had already gone through the "feral cat trap and neuter" program, and they had released him, and the poor guy was starving and lost in my apartment complex. The neighbour kids had been throwing stuff at him and tormenting him, and someone had tried to run him over with a car (he is STILL freaked out by cars, 9 years later).
I also had ferrets from the Wuzzles rescue, and I donate money to the pet programs that solicit donations through PetCo. I also directly donate bags of cat food and litter to the no-kill shelters in Phoenix.
I make it a point to completely avoid anything to do with PeTA, as I think they are not only nuts, but they hurt their cause more than helping. I also find it contradictory to see the same animal cruelty protesters wearing leather belts and suede Sketchers as they badger me at the Safeway, trying to rip meat out of my bags. Hmm, save the animals while pilfering and assaulting people and wearing animal by-products.
I like to help at the local level. My family has always taken in animals from shelters, and that is how I was raised.
I just took a job working at a shelter. i also volunteer there as well. It is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I couldn't be happier with the decision that I made.
I have saved lots of animals that ahve been hit by cars and left for dead on the raods and take them to the vet, more recently a koala. I have help birds that have fell out of nests and hand raised baby parrots which would other wise be dead.
I buy things from the RSPC good will shops and donate to the animal shelters I love animals.
-I volunteer at my local open-admission animal shelter
-I adopted a cat from the animal control
-I wrote a grant proposal for an animal rights organization
-I donate money to animal rights orgs
-I go to animal rights protests in my area
-I often respond to action alerts, writing to companies asking them to stop selling fur, stop promoting animal circuses, etc.
-I've written letters to the editor about animal rights / vegetarianism and a number of them have been published
And most importantly... I'm vegan. That prevents the suffering of about 100 animals a year. Woo hoo!
i helped thin out the elk herd this year.
My wife is an officer of environmental foundation (of which I am a donor) that among other things donates money, provides logistical support and educates conservation to local seaside villages for the protection of whale sharks, sea cows and mangroves. Also provodes funds for vet and shelter sevices for rescued and endangered wild animals
Part of our land has been designated and recognized as a wild migratory bird sanctuary. We also have a breeding program for the local variety of water buffalo
My children rescue abandoned kittens for adoption. 29 so far.
I was a volunteer for German Shepherd Rescue until I had to move to another city. Assisted and provoded financial help for the acquisition and traning of seeng eye dogs rescued from local shelters.
PS None of us are vegetarians by the way.
As a vegan I do all I can to minimise my contribution to the suffering and exploitation of animals; nothing dies to feed, clothe or beautify me or to clean me or my house.
I rather resent the implication that doing this is 'just talking' if no other animal welfare activities are carried out.
My answer to all your questions is no I haven't and don't.
I am a lifelong political activist but people, not animals, are my priority. My concern for animals however, led to me becoming vegetarian 39 years ago, and later becoming vegan.
Please don't guilt trip veg*ns into thinking they're not doing enough if they don't spend all their time and energies helping animals. We get enough of that sort of thing from hostile omnivores on this forum
Some people just happen to be in the situation where they can do other things. Is that any more effort ? Not really.
Does it lessen the impact or value of someone who is a veggie and does not keep or support adoptive animals ?
Not at all.
how much money i donate is no-ones business.
edit:
I did provide a proper answer but edited when i re-read this "just talking and not really doing anything personally". Its agressive and judgemental.
You are in the wrong category. Thanks, but most of us eat animals here. And no, I don't eat cat or dog. I love mine.
