Vegetarian for health reasons?!
Answers: I'm veg for environmental, ethical & health concerns. I have a friend who is only veg for health reasons. I think it seems a little selfish, but I was wonderin what you guys think??
Well at least he's vegetarian, if you think that's still selfish, do you think people who eat meat are selfish too? I think it's best to accept that not everyone can or wishes to follow a vegetarian diet, and people's motivations for it are wide and varied as well. Be a good friend and don't judge him based on his diet, I am sure you'd want your other friends to do the same to you in reciprocation. I'm vegan and married to an omnivore, and we coexist well for instance.
I became vegan for health reasons, but as I learned more about it I began to appreciate the environmental as well as ethical concerns. Give your friend a chance to learn more about it. Besides, no one likes a judgemental friend.
Well it's not 'selfish' per se, because they are doing it merely for their own benefits but it's not having a negative effect on anyone. What I can't understand is how people think it really is good for health, I just don't really see it as vegetarianism. I personally see vegetarianism as an ethical belief and way of life, if you don't eat meat for health reasons, I see it as 'not eating meat for health reasons'. I mean if I was merely vegetarian to be healthy, I would still have poultry now and again, because it doesn't really do any harm at all in moderation, your probably better off. I'm a vegetarian entirely for ethical beliefs, I think I've actually put on weight since I became vegetarian and I have a higher risk of becoming anaemic, etc and have to take supplements to ensure a balanced diet. I don't know how other people do it for health. But anyway I don't think it's selfish, but I do think it's a bit of a health/diet fad atm, no offence to any health veggies! Just my personal experience :)
It doesn't matter why your friend is a vegetarian.Tell them the other great benefits to the planet/animals and they'll feel even better about making positive changes in the world.
I think that you should support each other no matter the reason. This is something great that you share, and no matter why you are making the choice, we all need a little support...so be happy you have someone with you, some people are alone and have no one who will support them (just stick around here and you'll see)
good luck
I'm vegetarian for health reasons. How exactly do you think that it's selfish? Shouldn't vegans be able to say the same thing about you?
I don't think it's selfish at all. I do it for my health. you do it for the reasons that you do. Why is my or any other vegetarian's moral standing any buisness of yours anyway? I guess that I could say that you are narrow-minded for such a comment. That's just rediculous. And if you are a vegetarian for those reasons you gave... why haven't you jumped to vegan? Selfishness maybe?
I am a vegan for health reasons, how is that selfish. I have very serious food allergies more easily managed with a vegan diet. I don't see my decision to live healthy and hopefully hospital visit free life selfish at all. Maybe you could explain how it is.
How is it selfish if both paths end at the same conclusion. Even if he doesn't care about animals being slaughtered, he is still decreasing the demand for meat by not buying it. By living the same lifestyle as you, even for different reasons, he is still doing just as much good as you are.
I became a vegetarian for health reasons (my cholesterol was very high), and even though my primary motives were for self gain, my choice still had positive effects environmentally and ethically. It wasn't until later that I learned about the negative effects of the standard diet and understood that my choice helped more than just myself. And even though being a vegetarian is good for my health, knowing that I'm doing a little more good in the world is a great bonus.
There is no reason to act veggier-than-thou. All you'll do is turn people away from vegetarianism... and therefore negate any good you were trying to accomplish. It's rare to know anyone else that is also a vegetarian, so you should try to support them when you can.
Maybe your friend will realize what other good it is capable of after being veg a while longer.
