Do soy products give you gas?!

Question: Recently started a moderate soy diet and I have been feeling kinda bloated and gassy. I until recently I had never had soy. Is this normal? Will this go away once my body gets used to the soy? Will I have to give up the soy or take Beano forever? (kinda embarrassing question)

"Background: Ingestion of soy products may cause excessive intestinal gas. This gas results from colonic bacterial fermentation of the indigestible oligosaccharides raffinose and stachyose, which are present in high concentrations in legumes."(The Americna Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
This does occur frequently in most people. It doesnt mean that soy is bad for you. Its just not exactly the best product to consume before going to work in a small office with alot of employees =) hope this helps.

i get gassy from soy

It's probably the extra fiber in your diet.

we gave our daughter soy milk as a baby and it made her gassy so we switched her to rice milk. very comparable nutrition wise and is available fortified as well.

I can't speak for everyone, but they don't affect me that way. Soybeans are beans, after all, so it doesn't seem like a farfetched explanation. If that's the case, your body will probably adapt to it over time.

Beans go through our digestive system and interacts with the bacteria in our system. The waste product of that bacteria that aids in digestion is gas (process of internal fermentation). I doubt if we will ever not be gassy from soy or bean products, but there are supplements out there to help remedy this situation.

don't you people ever read up on anything?

(sighs)

At first soy did make my stomch upset and gassy (actually more like, ahem, diahrea) but my bosy quickly adjusted and is now benefitting from it emensely.
