What do you guys think of...?!

Question: selling cloned animals in supermarkets ?!

Answers: selling cloned animals in supermarkets ?!

This is a very interesting question.
I think if chicken wings and frog legs and whatever other body parts people often eat can be cloned as food tissue, it will prevent suffering and be better in the long run. If they're cloning an entire animal, complete with brain and spinal chord, that will not prevent suffering. I don't know much about cloning, but I do think most meat in supermarkets is pretty frightening now.
The people who will buy it are the same people who buy for convenience now, and trust the FDA and don't mind pesticides in their veggies and hormones in their meat.

i'm not sure what i think about it as i would have to do alot of reading on it to come up with an opinion but man, i can just imagine that would be one heck of a debate to watch!

I don't see the point.

Its not like there is a shortage of cows or chickens to necesitate cloning. It would be a lot more expensive to clone a chicken than to let them just breed

i think it is very odd that the fda made a decision on it now. given that it doesnt seem that it would be a financialy viable option for at least another 10-15 years and they have so little data about it. I find it especially odd that they decided that it does not require special labeling. Did you know that their reasoning (and i am paraphrasing an article i read in wired) is while they aknowlege that many cloned animals have defects and die young it is their belief that the ones that make it to adulthood where they might be eaten wouldnt have any defects. Rather alarming huh?

to play devil's advocate i would guess that this hasty decision is related directly to the belief that come Jan 09 there will be a democrat president and a real fda instead of one that serves business, but to be honest, it absolutely baffels me.

I'm just glad I'm a octo-vegetarian and wont need to worry about that.

I am a vegetarian and I don't eat meat....not sure why you're asking that question in this category.

Any-who. The idea of it really disturbs me. Apparently, the government has decided that the meat manufacturers don't need to let the public known if the meat has been cloned or not.... I think it's deceptive and deceitful. Personally, I think it's imperative to let the American people know if their food (both meat and vegetables!) has been genetically modified.

I think that the FDA has approved them. (maybe in fast food)
I find it repulsive to eat them but scientifically their isn't much of a difference.

" We have been eating genetically engineered meat ever since mankind started animal husbandry. We have engineered our dogs, and even ourselves through selection. Natural does not mean good for you! There are millions upon millions of "natural" things that can kill you. If these embryos are making it to adulthood, then that should be a good indicator that it is safe enough for the animal. All we are doing with cloning is mimicking natural processes. There wasn't anything wrong with the original animal, and there isn't anything wrong with its clone. In fact, cloning reduces mutations, which is what all humans are a factor of today. All of us are products of mutations that were beneficial to our survival or reproductive success. If the original animal was healthy, strong, and successful why shouldn't we want to reproduce that? That will give much safer meats than mother nature who will throw in some mutations here and there that might be destructive to our bodies. For example, cow diseases. If you can find a cow that has an immunity to a dangerous disease that might kill those who consume it, why not clone it? Why take your chances on getting cows that aren't immune and then watch as they either get sick and die, or worse, their meat makes it out to production? This is safer, better meat than what mother nature produces. Natural is very cruel and destructive to our bodies. Nature breaks our bodies down every day by killing cells and other means.

Same with the cloned meat -- the USDA which is in bed with the meat and dairy industry and will try to prevent the meat from being labeled from cloned animals. They'll probably even try to prohibit the meat-producers who do not use cloned meat from saying so on their labels, just as they did with the organic milk.

But my statement is a strong yet neutral one...nothing should derived from animals (including human flesh). Go vegan!

I think that's a huge waste of money.

And.. really stupid. Meat is meat, why clone it? What's the point? lol It all tastes the same in the end doesn't it?

But that's just me.
