Hey Fresshhh,

My family owned an Asian restaurant while back so I can actually answer this confidently.

Because of all the health issues, if they say that it's a vegetable egg roll, it will NOT have any meat products. There are people out there who are actually allergic to certain types of meat as well as enzymes (?) that are released when meat is cooked so they will not risk somebody dropping dead just so they can sell some egg rolls.

What you found, most likely, is actually soybean product that tastes, and actually looks like, meat. Since the whole Mad Cow disease, the restrictions on importing meat products are very stringent. So many factories started using these soy products that taste like meat (although nobody actually seems to be able to tell whether beef or pork), and the taste is quite convincing.

So no worries.

some eggrolls contain meat, some vegetables.

hahaha sorry to hear that, and even more sorry to give you the bad news... usually the red meat in it is pork.

last time I had one it had some shrimps in it, but There are different ways they are sometimes made like a spring roll =].

if the box says the dont have meat, then they dont. egg rolls have things that look like meat, but aren't. i've been in the same position!

They sell vegetarian Egg Rolls at the grocery stores.

BUT

If your a strict Vegetarian then I don't know what you can & can not have within your guidelines.

Some eggrolls are vegetarian and some contain meat. Depends on who made 'em. Maybe the lady lied to you.

No, a majority of the time they DO NOT, usally cabbage and carrots and other things. However when they make eggrolls they do dip them in egg to hold them together kinda of like a glue.

It depends on what type of egg roll it was. There are numerous different kinds- some contain meat and some do not.
Eggrolls often contain ingredients that look similar to small chicken pieces.

Some have chicken ,shrimp or veg!

Some contain Meat and they also have veggie egg rolls... Normally I have seen egg rolls with Red meat.. I dont know what it looked like so I really cant determine if the one you ate was with meat!

was it a shrimp roll spring roll or egg roll ? egg rolls have pork in them

Yes, it is very possible that they do, and some restaurants do not specifiy. However, this happened to me, and you have to just let go, and know that was the past and just know you will do better next time. Just make sure to ask the server about foods like that where you can't see the insides.

An eggroll can contain anything. Don't feel like you've done wrong. If the makers claim they put no meat in it then they are wrong if they did and you made no concious choice to eat meat. It may have been tofu or something. You might go back and tell them how upset you are you may have eaten meat. It might prevent their mess up in the future(if they did infact have meat in it) and make them more concientious in the future.

Next time ask for spring rolls. These are most often veg friendly. Don't tear your self up. no one is going to take away your birthday. You just live and learn. If you feel like you need to do something about it go and volunteer some time this weekend at an animal shelter or wildlife rehab center.

egg rolls i've eaten at chinese places have meat....perhaps the lady didn't understand your question, if she doesn't speak english too well.

lmao....egg rolls! key word "egg", they are dipped in egg, and the red stuff is pork. its not that big of a deal to accidentally eat meat.

don't cry!! i hate it when girls cry!! but yes, some contain PORK and others contain Shrimp paste. Some even have just veggies. Others are strictly vegan with tofu and gluten made to look like meat. You're fine. You're not going to get a demerit for accidentally eating meat....i highly doubt there was meat in that roll..

well it depends.

you can make egg rolls with all kinds of fillings.

It depends what sort of egg roll it was, some have meat and some don't.

Some are stuffed with cabbage and veggies and it does look sort of like meat sometimes... also a piece of meat could have somehow made it in during preparation, especially if they were made on location (I am assuming this was a Chinese food place, meaning they probably make food with meat there?)

Please, please don't cry about it, it's really not a calamity. I've been vegan for a good while now, and vegetarian for probably three times a good while, and I know how you feel - but in the end, this will happen to you now and then throughout your whole life. It's alright, there is no "perfect" vegetarian, and it will happen again.

A few weeks ago I bought a vegetarian stir fry from an Asian marketplace and it was mislabeled, after I had a few bites I realized it had tiny little baby shrimp in it. I just stopped eating it and that was that, no tears.

I might be way off, don't get offended by this, but... Do you have a bit of an eating disorder or a perfectionist streak/obsessive compulsive tendency? It's just because you got so paranoid that there might have been something "forbidden" or "unapproved of" in your egg roll, and because of your very severe reaction.

It's important to reflect why you were so shaken... a tiny flake of meat in something you purchased will not in any way invalidate your vegetarianism, nor does it change in any way the fact that you are vegetarian. "S-word happens", is the phrase :)

they almost always have pork or shrimp, unless it is specifically called a 'vegetable egg roll' (like you'd but at trader joe's or something)

a spring roll, on the other hand, is usually veggies only, although it always helps to ask

Hon, it doesn't mean you're not a vegetarian if you unwittingly eat a piece of meat that you didn't know was there. What makes you a vegetarian is your desire and your attempts to avoid meat.
