Why would you get sick after not eating meat for a while?!


Question: I've been a vegetarian for about three and a half years now. I've always wondered when I read about going back to meat (something I've never considered but I have researched) Why it would cause such a shock to your body? I was thinking about other foods that people don't usually eat but when they do it's not such a big deal as meat. For example someone who hasn't tried a certain fruit, like my friend has never had papaya. Her body wouldn't go haywire if she had it.

So what's the difference between that and meat?

Or perhaps a strange food you'd eat while traveling, like crickets or something. You don't usually eat it but just because you don't it doesn't cause problems.

I don't know I guess its just something i've always wondered. Hopefully you guys can help me out

I think there are both physicial and psychological factors.

Physical: meat takes longer to digest. It might cause a stomach ache in someone who is not used to eating something that takes that long to digest.

Psychological: the taste, texure and smell might be considered upleasant by someone who is not in the habit of eating meat. Some people have a bad reaction to something and then feel "sick" if they ever see or smell it again. I got sick drinking tequila once. If I ever smelled it again, I would start to feel sick.

Just how much one or the other might affect somebody would depend on the person.

I guess it's like if you cut out a certain food you have eaten all the time for ages (eg. sugar) and you stop cold turkey...your body will have a reaction.

Maybe if a vegetarian hasn't eaten meat for years when they do have some their body doesn't know what to do with it and rejects it. (because of certain vitamins in it - your body isn't used to those)

Your body needs enzymes to break down meat called proteases. Apparently in a vegetarian your body stops producing the proteases. However, I was vegetarian for 2 years and didn't get sick when I ate meat.

i have never read that,but maybe you need to just take alittle at a time to get use to it

I don't think that you would get sick - unless you got sick before from eating meat.

Your example makes the point.

While I have heard people make that point - I never agreed with it - for the reasons, again, that you made.

Now - maybe if you STUFFED yourself on something that is not common to your diet - THEN you would have a negative reaction of sorts......

Sensitivity.

More often than not, the less you eat of something the more you can detect the odors of that which you've chosen to not eat. When I was a vegan for a while, hamburgers began to smell a lot like the contents of a sewer. Considering the way many American cattlemen raise their livestock that shouldn't have come as a surprise to me.

Wanna know an easy way to figure out if you'll get sick? Drink some Gatorade!

Gatorade has a lot of electrolytes, just like meat. Those electrolytes aren't found in most vegetarian diets.

My friend got pretty ill after drinking Gatorade after being a vegetarian for a year or so. It's a good idea for vegetarians to periodically drink Gatorade to keep your system accustomed to electrolytes. That's what I did and when I ate meat for the first time in years, I didn't feel a thing.

Your body lowers and or stops producing some of the enzymes needed to digest meat.

You'll start production again if you start eating meat, but you need to start small.

say, a few bacon bits on a salad, then maybe some cubed chicken, increasing the amounts bit by bit, stopping the increase if you're not feeling well.

regarding the papaya, it's made for the same thing as any other fruits. the sugsars aren't exotic, they're just mixed differently, which gives it that wonderful taste.

now i've got a craving for papaya again. Haven't had it in a while.

Meat is harder to digest than most foods, and it takes more energy, so after awhile your body stops making the enzymes neccesary to digest meat. Hope I helped :D

people react differently to various foods. Some people take time to get used to certain foods according to their own individual bodies reactions while some have no problems with anything. You wrote "...like my friend has never had papaya. Her body wouldn't go haywire if she had it...". If I understand this sentence correctly, your friend has not tried papaya yet. She may get a very or mild or no upset stomach at all if she did.
My experience is this. people who try out new foods and like it tend to indulge or eat more than usual of this new food and do get upset stomachs due to over indulgence more than anything else. Or some people are mildly allergic to some chemicals and nutrients contained in the new food. or that vegetarians who tried to eat meat have a psychosomatic reaction to the fact that they are consuming a previously taboo food (like people reacting violently to eating worms or insects or other exotic foods, something that their mind tells them is wrong).
I get more bad reactions when eating certain tropical fruits like durian ( a foul smelling fruit from SE Asia. it stinks so bad that it is forbidden in hotels and many restaurants) or "longkong" (a small seasonal tropical fruit from Thailand) or "Dragon fruit" (from China, said to have medicial qualities) than I do with exotic meats (ostrich, gator etc)to be honest.
