If it says rennet, then it is calf rennet.
(I've done so much research on this)
What they replace rennet with is microbial enzyme...if it says microbial enzym, then you are good to go, if it says rennet, then you are eating curdled milk from an calf's stomach that has not been weened!
Rennet is either from animal calf or vegetable origin.
Never heard of one from "milk"
Reading interviews with the "wholefoods" founder / owner ( whos name escapes me now ) I doubt he would have anything to do with animal rennet
Rennet is what makes milk curdle into cheese, so it couldn't be "from" milk. That doesn't make sense. Online Etymology Dictionary - Cite This Source - Share This
rennet (1)
"inner membrane of a calf's stomach," c.1400, probably from an unrecorded O.E. *rynet, related to gerennan "cause to run together," because it makes milk run or curdle; from P.Gmc. *rannijanan, causative of *renwanan "to run" (see run). Cf. Ger. rinnen "to run," gerinnen "to curdle."
Although, it could be from another origin, such as a vegetable base if they are saying it's a Vegan product. Whole Foods is a reputable company, the person just might be incorrect with the milk fact!
Rennet/enzymes is/are not only animal based. They can be plant and microbial as well.
