Ethical vegan question about milk?!
Answers: I'm a vegan, and my husband is not. My husband asked that if I drink organic milk (stonyfeild farms/ organic horizen) instead of rice milk, we can share, and he won't drink regular milk. we don't have money to buy both rice dream and organic dairy (were young and pretty poor), so I was thinking overall, its better for the cows even if I dont like it, it helps support ethical treatment for dairy cows, prevents him from getting abused cow milk, and saves us some money. I'll still consider myself vegan (eating everything else vegan, using no fur, leather, or non-ethical cosmetics, etc.), and I'm helping some cows. I really don't like the taste and all that much (never liked meats and dairy really), and might be hard to start (its like a phobia), but I don't really know what else I could do... what do you think vegans/vegetarians? any help? :) thanks all!
Hey ka yun yoon, I'm a vegan activist, but i'm saying this...
Your intention is to "survive", go ahead with any dairy milk. You must stay alive to safe many lives as possible. God knows your truthful intention, and He gave you the mercy and greater capacity to save many lives and reduce innocent sufferings. That's one reason why He had chosen you out of thousands....He gave you the "power" to love & care all beings and nature, and "capacity" to keep peace!
It seems fine to me.
I think that you should not care what anyone else does and do what you feel most comfortable. My wife is a vegan and I am not and I respect her right to follow some rules while she respects mine.
First thing that popped into my head when I read the question doesn't have anything to do with cows or milk.
It was about your husband and your marriage.
Why can't he switch to rice milk? He expects you to eat something you don't like, why can't he make the same commitment?
Switch off. Rice milk one week, organic milk the next.
That sounds more fair to me.
About the milk itself:
Do some research. There are commercial dairys out there that do right by the cows. More and more every day.
I drink Organic Valley.
EDIT TO ADD:
Call yourself vegan.
Call yourself a squid.
It makes no difference. There are no vegan police gonna chase you down and tatto "cheater" on your forehead.
Relax.
do whatever you want, but you cannot (in the words of my favorite troll ashley) morally call yourself a "vegan" if you are going to use cow milk
i think its okay, - from your point of you view, you just have to make sure that it is proper organic milk.
also have you every tried almond milk? - that tastes great
By the way i think that its cool that you are trying, and that you are aware of these things, - its cool! - especially as you are buying things that are ethical. good for you! .
good luck!
Organic dairy just means that the cows are pumped full of steriods (actually FDA certified does allow certain chemicals to be used and its still allowed to be called organic). When you buy dairy, you support the veal industry and are responsible for the shorter lifespan of overmilked cows. I'm not trying to make you feel guilty. You do the best you can. One alternative if you're having money problems is to buy shelf life soy in bulk or powdered soymilk. I used to buy a brand called "Better Than Milk" at Whole Foods. When I wanted to use it, I put a couple of tbsps of the powdered soymilk in a blender with cold water and wa la. It lasts forever and doesn't need to be refrigerated. If you only have money to buy one or the other, then one week let him buy milk for himself and the next week you can use the money to buy soy. Just get your calcium from somewhere else on your 'off' week. Good Luck.
A vegan consumes no animal products, and this includes "organic" milks. An organic dairy cow still has her baby taken away from her and she still goes to slaughter when her production dries up. Remember, cows' milk is for baby COWS.
Whole Foods sells store-brand plant milks that are fairly inexpensive (a lot less expensive than organic milk), and maybe you and your husband could try those. You can also buy the tetra packs in larger amounts since they don't need to be refrigerated until you open them.
im an ethical vegan... but i think that your decision is for the best, especially if your poor... its very understandable (ill be in that possition thic coming June XD but my fiancee said he'd drink the ricemilk or soymilk instead)
you can buy your milk from Horizon Organic's, i've called them and everything to make sure that they treat their dairy cows (and their babies, which they don;t support veal) good. if you dont like the taste, jsut dont drink milk at all. you can use it in your cooking, which should taste too different from using ricemilk in that case.
lolz oh! Ash I didn't even know it was you when I answered at first XD
Actually,I would check up about the better treatment of cows,I'm not so sure it's all that better, guess,it depends what brands, free range or not,...I don't like the taste of milk either,I love Almond milk! But,if you keep drinking it you will probably get used to the taste,as with him with rice milk(has he tried Almond milk)?Good luck!
hi im a veggie
why dont you try soy milk thats what i drink
also you should try the saniteruim sausages aspessialy made for vegans so yeah
well good luck
I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan, but if I was, and I had to make the choice, I would get the organic milk. It helps support the fair treatment of cows. I don't know if the abuse of animals is the reason you're a vegan or not, but that is the case for the few vegans I know, and from knowing the type of people they are, I'm pretty sure they'd be fine with it and still consider themselves vegans. Even if you don't consider yourself vegan anymore, you would then be classified as a vegetarian, which is just as good.
"Organic" only means that the food is free of drug and chemicals. The label has nothing to do with the treatment of animals, and the conditions for animals on organic farms are often no different than on factory farms. See http://www.goveg.com/organic_products.as... for more info.
If you want to start drinking milk again, that's certainly your choice. Just please recognize that organic milk is no more "humane" or "ethical" than conventional milk.
randomish idea:
try almond milk.
i like it more than both rice and normal.
You can do as you please, but keep in mind that organic milk doesn't necessarily mean that cows were treated humanely. Organic mainly has to do with the feed that the cows are fed and the chemicals that can be injected into their body. There are some requirements for access to pasture and living space, but in my opinion they come nowhere close to humane treatment. But of course it is better than regular milk.
There is no such thing as a vegan person that drinks milk, just as there aren't any vegetarians that eat fish.
Just because milk is organic, that doesn't mean that it is any more ethical. Organic is less unhealthy and that's it.
What do organic dairies do with male calves? How long are they allowed to nurse their young? What happens to cows that have decreasing milk production?
If you're ok with doing it, then do it. However you aren't vegan if you drink milk (or use any other animal products) and it'd be better for the rest of us if you don't say you are. That confuses people.
If you can't afford both, then you decide what you want to do without. Personally, i'd just not buy (nondairy) milk. I rarely use it anyway.
If you want to consider yourself vegan, even though you aren't, that makes the rest of us look bad. I'm not really sure how you're helping cows by using them for the nutritional beverage meant for their children. A dairy cow's entire life is about being pregnant/lactating and then your baby is taken away so that machines can suck out your milk & give it to humans. What a lovely way to live. All of the stress that this causes produces harmful hormones that go right into that milk. "Organic" or otherwise. COW'S milk. Get it? It's meant for calves. Not humans.
We can't be 100% vegetarian, since we started with mother milk..and this world mostly everything becoming artificial..
