The government has more or less brainwashed consumers into believing you need meat to be healthy. It is anything but! To be healthy, you need a balance of vitamins, minerals, protein, good fats, fiber - all things you can get in healthy form from non-meat and non-animal sources. As a psychologist I read a lot of medical research, and meat has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, colon and other cancers, more rapid aging, high cholesterol, high blood pressure... the list goes on. And the amazing thing is research on vegetarian and vegan diets shows almost no occurrence of these! The government so badly wants you to believe you need meat and animal products to live a healthy lifestyle, but it is one big program they are running because it is in THEIR best interest for you to consume meat, not YOURS. Read "Skinny B*tch" to learn more about vegetarian and veganism, the health benefits, environmental impact, and the disgusting meat and dairy industries.

all I know is I couldnt do it.. I love my meat!

i have been a vegetarian all my life due to an adverse reaction i have to animal proteins. you should just consume a wide variety of foods to supplement your diet. keep in mind the food groups and be creative. there's plenty online info on the pros of vegetarianism. just type in a search- benefits of vegetarianism and you'll get lots of good info that way. Also, there are tons of super vegetarian meal ideas and recipes online that will prevent you from getting in a food rut and keep you from getting bored. DO NOT eat just one type of food only. There's a never ending variety out there. once you start reading the benefits of being vegetarian, you'll increase your desire as well as your motivation. i don't doubt you'll add new reasons to your list as well. good luck and congratulations! it really is a life changing decision not only for yourself but for others as well.

The are many reasons for becoming a Vegetarian. i know two or three. They don't eat meet because they LOVE animals. I think it is an amazing thing when someone says they don't eat meet anymore. But if you go vegetarian remember get protein for other healthy sources. [peanuts]
But, you don't have to go full vegan. just being vegetarian you could still eat eggs, drink milk, things like that.
If you are going to make any changes, make sure you research everything.

I became vegetarian for environmental reasons mostly (and later vegan for humanitarian reasons).

Giving up meat made me feel so great. I know that I am healthier now. The problem that I found was that people eat too much meat. You really don't need much, certainly not everyday. Especially if you are eating eggs, whole wheat, cheese, brown rice, nuts, beans etc.

People always ask about the protein, people have such warped senses of vegetarianism. And some of these people eat lots of fast food. People who are smart do not become pale nor unhealthy.

What changed for me, is that I became less tired. I was eating much more vegetables and fruit then before and I put more thought into what I was buying and how I was cooking it.

Vegan has multiplied that for me. I didn't so much become vegan because I loved animals, I switched because I don't want to support the meat industry.

You do not need to eat meat to be healthy.

That s a common myth, usually spread by people who have no experience of a vegetarain diet.

Look at "yazzers" answer. Someone becoming ill after 2 weeks was definately not on a decent vegetarian diet. I bet they ate nothing but veggie burgers or salads. And spinal tap due to veggie diet, Sorry, i missed the piece of research that connects the 2. Yazzer didn't "prove" any point, all they did was prove 2 of thier friends were ill, thats all.

why would being vegetarian not help "protect" animals ?

Farm animals are reared only because people buy them to eat. If you do not buy animals or thier by-products the meat demand will drop and less will be reared in the current dire conditions of the commercial meat industry.

People have a variety of reasons for becoming vegetarian, animal welfare is one reasons for some people, for others its healthy, religion, environment....

The reason someone becomes vegetarian is because they don't wish to eat animal flesh. Whether it is diet or ethically related is up to the individual. Truthis, you have to WANT to do it to achieve any level of success or to understand the reasoning behind it.

Yazzer---you're uninformed. There are alternate sources for EVERY nutrient supplied by meat.

have u ever seen a video of what the inside of a slaughter house looks like they hang the pigs and cows up by their feet wile their still threshing around completely aware of what is happening and in chicken factors some workers rip the heads off of the chickens simply because they find it more amusing then slitting their throats keep in mind the animal is able to feel pain there is no antistatic or the whole time now does that sound fair that they have to suffer when their is so other foods we have to eat which by the way are a lot healthier

i became a vegetarian cause i hate plants...

Hi, well I was mostly a vegetarian, except I would eat like turkey and chicken sometimes. But I am now a full vegan.

Different reasons.

health
environment
animals
religion
karma/morals

I started out because of animals. I quit eating red meat at 12. I went vegetarian at 16. I learned how cruel the egg and dairy industries are, and i realized how it didn't make any sense that I was against animal cruelty but I supported the egg & dairy industries. So I went vegan at 24 (a little over a year ago.) It's never been hard for me because at each stage it was just right for me at the time, and as I learned more, I did better. Now I realize all the other good aspects, not just being against animal cruelty, but my health is better and i'm doing more for the environment. I'm not even leaving anyone behind when I go, but I seem to do more for the environment than those who will be leaving children behind and couldn't care less.

I try not to do anything to others that I wouldn't want done to me. Life's pretty simple that way.

For the sake of your health, do not become one.

Becoming a vegetarian means no meat, right? So, that means no significant sources of protein and most fatty acids you need to maintain a healthy diet.

Also, some of my friends became vegetarians and I don't really think they liked it. One became really pale after the first two weeks and the other, well, he had to have a spinal tap because he had gotten so bad.

I think I prove my point.
