Vegetarian lifestyle?!

Question: I decided a while ago that I would observe a vegetarian lifestyle, if only for a little while, to see if it works for me. I'm really passionate about it. I know it will be difficult, so spare me the lectures; I know I can do it. The only problem is I'm at war with my mother over it. For whatever reason, she doesn't want me to do it, and I can't convince her otherwise. I'm 16 - am I old enough to make my own lifestyle choices? She feeds me, so I know she'll find a way to make me eat what she serves. If she's not on board, I can't do it. What should I tell her? How can I convince her that this is right for me?

Ask her what it is she's scared of. Then do your research and prove her wrong. The American Dietetic Association and the Dietitians of Canada both suppor vegetarian and vegan diets.

If that doesn't work, save up your pennies and buy your own food. Then again, even an omnivorous household should still have an abundance of fresh produce and other vegetarian-friendly foods.

At 16 you are old enough to cook for yourself! AND you are old enough to get a job to buy your own ingredients, so, as long as she has no problem with you using her kitchen, I don't see the problem.

Well, I'm a vegetarian and I'm younger than you are. What I would do is (if you have a job or have saved money) pay for your own food until your mother realizes that you are truly commited to being a vegetarian.

i had this fight with my mam at 14 and she didn't win. she used to try force me to eat it 'your not leaving this table' etc etc.. but I'd been cooking for myeslf way before that but i just never gave in. so its not easy but to be honest i've been veg for 2years now and I've never 'craved' meat its actually not difficult at all and you almost forget meat's there!

Keep talking to her. Present your case intelligently and try to keep your emotions in check.

Also, many 16 year olds have jobs. If you feel strongly, get a job and provide for your own food.
