Vegetarian cookbooks and restaurants?!

Question: I want to be able to enjoy going out still, and not become tired of eating the same old thing. Any recommendations?

Mediterranean - hummus, pitas, falafel; Indian - just ask, most Indians know the term vegan and make quite a bit of vegan food; Chinese - just ask, many Chinese restaurants now carry soy mock-meats & tofu to substitute in meat dishes; Japanese - lots of options from udon & soba to tofu dishes. Olive Garden's minestrone soup is vegan if you get it without cheese on top, and they can make butterless breadsticks upon request, and if you get the salad without the crutons and cheese and ask for oil & vinegar it is vegan. If you're ever in New York City I HIGHLY recommend Candle 79, Candle Cafe, Wild Ginger Kitchen, and Zen Palate. If you're ever in San Francisco try Millenium or Greens. If you're around Ithaca, NY try Moosewood. If you're in Middletown, CT try It's Only Natural. There are several web sites that also list vegetarian & vegan restaurants by state. Good luck!

Try an Ethiopian restaurant or Indian restaurant. Sometimes cuban or spanish foods have a lot of rice and beans.

Thai and Indian offer a large range of vegetarian dishes. Also try Japanese for some flair. It's hard to find a whole lot at sushi joints, but you can still find some good eats!

Sushi has great veggie options too (avocado rolls)

If you are still eating eggs and dairy, you really shouldn't have a problem, most restaurants have veggie options now. If you do order food like pasta, make sure that they know that you are veggie, no beef and chicken broth.

My fav. restaurants are Sri Lankan, Korean, Indian and Ethiopian.

As for veggie cookbookds, there are SO many. I love my Moosewood cookbook, but normally I just go online....veggies LOVE sharing their recipes :)

Good Luck!

Depending on where you live, Spiral Diner & The Chicago Diner are good, you might also want to try an Indian, Thai, or Ethiopian.

As Maria suggested, check out www.happycow.net and www.vegdining.com. Most Asian places have options, but be sure to ask about fish sauce, as it does pop up in Thai and Vietnamese cooking. Almost any Indian restaurant will have vegetarian options. Middle Eastern--you can easily enjoy a falafel platter. And hummus is the best!

As for cookbooks, there are many, many vegetarian cookbooks out there, but I recommend Sarah Kramer, Isa Chandra Moskowitz, and Robin Robertson's cookbooks.
