What red dye # is it that's not vegetarian?!

Question: I can't remember if it's #40 or #5 or something. Or is it all of the red dyes?

The red dye that is not vegan is carmine or cochineal. Red dye #40 is vegan, but it's not very good for you, as it's made from coal.

There's a red dye that isn't vegetarian?
Oh my God, I didn't know that.
I'm gonna freak out now.

Stay away from the #40

I know that cochineal (a red dye derived from the cochineal insect) is not vegan. I'm not positive what dye number it is though.

Natural Red 4. #40 is vegan though.

All FD&C colors are vegan, but you'd probably be better off not eating dyed food, unless it is dyed with natural things like beets or tumeric. The only red color I know of that isn't vegan is carmine, which is derived from crushed beetles. I believe carmine goes by other names to (which escape me at the moment). I know Good 'n' Plenty candy isn't vegan because it contains carmine, and there is a shampoo that makes red highlights stand out that also contains carmine.
