What health benefits have you felt since becoming vegg/vegan?!
thanks
Answers: have you lost any excess weight, felt fitter, healhyier in any way? just wondering - as i think it seems more healthy
thanks
Since becomming a vegan, I have noticed increased mental clarity, weight loss, a sense that I'm doing right be myself, and a sense of pride is starting to brew as well. One thing to consider if you haven't been vegetarian before is that you'll hear about it from your friends. You have to be ready to defend you decision and stick to it. Try it secretly to see if it will stick, then get ready to be called a hippie or a punk. And above all have fun with it.
Erm to be honest? None. I become vegetarian for entirely ethical issues and have felt no health benefits from my new diets, if anything ti has given negative effects, I think I've put on a bit of weight; but then I'm personally not a healthy eater, I don't focus on it. But also, because it has cut out most of the iron in my diet and other nutrients, I take supplements to make sure I get everything I need, that my diet doesn't give me. In my opinion heath vegetarians don't exist, they are actually just healthy people with good balanced diets, however, cutting out red meat is a healthy option I believe. Hope this helps.
I've found that my skin has cleared up considerably and I smell better [even without any perfume/deodorant]. When I get sick, it doesn't last as long as it used to when I was eating meat and dairy products.
Most drastically, i was having stomach problems and now i am not having them. I was very healthy apart from that before i switched and i still am.
I didn't lose weight when I went vegetarian because I was still eating lots of eggs and dairy. The extra padding (about 15 pounds) finally came off when I went vegan and I've never felt better!
Since becoming Vegan I have found and kept my natural weight. You can expect to feel nauseous off and on for several weeks as the putrifaction from your previous animal based diet leaves your body.
Depending how sensitive you are to start with and how "raw' vegan you go, you may notice yourself becoming more sensitive to things, more aware and depending on your environment more anxious!
At these points the tendency is to retreat to the familiar. Also the dominant and unconciously guilty meat eating group feel very challenged by veganism and many will try to make you conform to their paradigm.
From my experience you are likely to find it easier to get in touch with your own spirituality once you shed the energies held in other killed beings. This may sound a little new age but it is a new age and you wouldn't be asking the question if you weren't questioning where you are at and where you may go!
My advice is to take it easy - giving up meat is like giving up cigarettes or alcohol - you are on a journey so enjoy the view and challenges ahead.
Have a mixed diet low as posible in refined sugars and starches, you will get lots of protein in seeds, nuts and vegtables. We actually need very little as for example mother's milk has only 3% protein - and horses get all theirs from grass!
Good luck it's a challenge but one worth taking up. As a by product you will live longer, live longer and fitter and smell better. And you won't be taking other life for your own desires.
Good luck and lots of love to you.
more energy. A lighter feeling, like I don't feel so 'heavy' after I eat a meal and I don't get sleepy after eating.
Better gastrointestinal digestion. I was having G.E.R.D. issues with digesting animal protein.
The only downside is my friends who all like to meet up and go out to dinner. Their comments that I'm a "tree hugger" "too liberal", "a hippie" ect. Sometimes they even introduce me to their friends as "this is my dorky, liberal, health science conscious friend who eats weird food".
Oh and F.Y.I. It's been shown that in older children that wet the bed still, that cutting the dairy out of their diet can stop it.
I got an amazing girlfriend. My GPA raised to a 3.81. my acne went away. my sebboreah derminititis disappeared. My staph infection healed. My nightmares ceased.
Oh check out some of that propaganda.
Everyone knows someone who has a sister who went vegan and almost died...lol
Well, for me, I became happier...I didn't feel tired, most energy. I love knowing that I am not supporting an industry I am so against.
I find that since going vegan, I eat more of a variety of foods. My meals aren't focused on meat, veggies....etc. when you eat meat, all of your meals are focused on that. It's strange.
Now I will have half a pita pizza, an avocado salad, steamed veggies.....when I ate meat and cheese, I would have pizza, and sometimes a salad with it.
Anyways, if you are thinking about trying it, I say GO for it. Stop eating meat for 2 weeks and see how you feel.
There is no question I feel and look better. I lost 10lbs when I went vegetarian, and another 10lbs when I went vegan. I have not gained a pound since! I'm also constantly told my skin is gorgeous and glowing, and people think my hair is so shiny and healthy looking. I rarely get sick, I haven't had a single break-out/pimple, I don't sweat as much, my breath isn't as bad, and overall I just feel WONDERFUL. I truly feel this is the way humankind was meant to eat, and feel bad for all of those people out there brainwashed by the government into eating meat because it's good for the economy and NOT the people - they may never know true health & happiness!
When I was a meat-eater I had about 2 or 3 migraines a month! It was horrible but I could never figure out what caused them! Then about 2 1/2 years ago my husband and I went vegetarian for animal rights. Guess what?! I have had at most 3 or 4 migraines since we became veggies!!
Went to very healthy vegan from typical N. American diet. Doing high level bicycle racing and other exercise (high amounts of exercise really helps in seeing any differences in diet alteration).
No fat loss; had no fat to lose.
Athletic stamina increased greatly.
Acne disappeared.
Increase energy in general.
Athletic recovery increased greatly.
Felt like a cloud that I never knew was there was lifted from my mind -- I could suddenly think so much faster and more clearly.
Needed less sleep.
No more coughs, or other sicknesses.
Greasy skin/hair - gone.
Didn't develop a cold for 10 years after (then it was due to doing horrible graveyard shift screwing me up).
Wasn't depressed anymore.
When I develop a cold (once every year or two) it usually lasts a day or two (due to lack of sleep/exercise).
My eye colour changed from dark brown to hazel green.
Took about a year or more, but I could taste better -- things that I thought had no flavour suddenly were bursting with flavour and subtle nuances etc. Then I could really tell the difference between organic and non-organic. Also appreciate the subtle flavours of herbal teas etc. Just a whole new world of taste.
Until I started doing graveyard shift, everyone thought I was at least 10 years younger than I actually am. I'm not on graveyard anymore, but have two young kids... so it's almost the same thing -- dead tired all the time, so I'm starting to look my age, I think.
There's probably more, but I've been living like this for almost 20 years, so...
Just generally feel great compared to before.
i have a lot more color in my face rather than looking pale all the time, i dont feel tired all the time, i can actually poo rather than walking around all the time constipated, and i jus feel far far better.
who needs meat!? lol
- i gave up meat because it was making me feel sick & ill all the time, i gave up just a couple of weeks ago and already noticed a big difference in myself.
=)
I lost a lot of unnecessary weight. I feel much better all round really. No regrets.
Yes! I have felt like I have more energy all day, need less sleep, my mind is sharper or clearer, too. I have lost a few unnecessary pounds I was carrying around, but the weight loss happened very slowly (The initial few pounds were fast, but after that it was slow, which I think is healthier anyway).
Also, before I became vegan I had problems with my iron levels. My anemia caused me to be very lightheaded at times and my mind to seem sluggish, especially during that time of the month. Now, it doesn't bother me at all, and I was actually allowed to give blood!
Both my husband and I have noticed that our skin is clearer, less greasy and has better color, overall.
And all of this is just the stuff that we can see and/or feel. I think that the vegan diet is good for our insides as well.
I am a lot fitter & healthier.
My osteoarthritis has almost dissappeared.
I can now do aerobics, etc.
It's a whole lot nicer for the animals too.
None, it made me ill.
I'm a carnivore as are most people. As the human beings evolved they lost most of the capability of the appendix which is used to digest vegetables. In vegetarian animals the appendix is the size of a second stomach and greatly helps with the digestion of vegetables. On Carnivores like humans, wolves, lions, dogs, etc. the appendix is very small.
There really aren't any.. You're in the most danger for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Women especially are prone to iron deficiencies as they lose most of their iron every month during menstruation, and that meat is your best source of iron. Taking vitamin/mineral suppliments aren't your best bet to beat this, as the body doesn't absorb them as well from their pill-state as they do from their natural state in foods. Usually only 50% of your needed levels are absorbed.
