What do I do with tofu?!
So what's your favorite thing to do with tofu (silken/firm/etc)?
Anyone ever fry it like chicken? My sister is into frying chicken, I could talk her into attempting it for me lol. Maybe if I soaked it in veggie broth...
:)
Answers: I'm useless with the stuff, but I'm vegetarian so I figure I should get a start on it. Also don't have too much time and money to spend on hardcore fancy recipes, but trying to eat healthy and keep it tasty.

Silken tofu, rice milk, frozen strawberries and banana Oh gawd (I can't remember what a milkshake tastes like, but this is heaven, and I drink it in the morning)
I love cut up tofu mixed with hossein sauce and baked in the oven until the sauce is reduced and sticky.
Also good as sweet and sour (I don't have the measurements because I do it to taste....)
add
Ketchup, white vinegar and brown sugar
Throw it in a pan with chopped tofu and fry until it reduces and becomes sticky.
I also like to fry it with garlic, ginger and soya sauce.
Breaded and panned fried is great too (I dip my slice of tofu in soy milk, then dip it in breadcrumbs mixed with herbs and garlic powder.) The you add a spaghetti sauce and vegan cheese and it become tofu Parmesan. (without the Parmesan, unless I get the vegan stuff)
Stir fry with with veggies, tofu and peanut sauce is yummy.
(Peanut butter, olive oil, soya sauce and water, mix well and add it at the end.
experimenting is key.
If you like stir fry try frying it like chicken and using fresh vegetables in a skillet. I love General Tso's sauce and many stores sell it to add while cooking. Tofu will take on the flavor of whatever it is cooked with. I use the xtra firm for frying. Be sure to pat it dry 1st to remove excess water.
Just because your a vegetarian doesn't mean you have to eat tofu. I was a vegan for two years and only had it occasionally. The good thing about tofu is it really doesn't have a "flavor" to it. It takes on the flavor of whatever your cooking it with. You can get your proteins from other things such as beans if you don't like the tofu, but below are a few of my favorite recipe's. and Yes, you can fry it like chicken. You'll want to deep fry it just till the coating browns, but you'll need a good dipping sauce or it will just be bland.
Fried Tofu:
1 (350 g) package extra firm tofu
3 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
1/4 cup Red Star nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon seasoning (EG Tony Chachere's, Mrs Dash or mix your own combination)
1 tablespoon olive oil, to lightly grease a skillet (or other veggie oil)
Lightly grease a non-stick pan with oil.
Put tamari (soy sauce) in a bowl.
In another bowl mix yeast and spices.
Slice tofu into 1/4-inch slices.
Dip tofu in the tamari and then in the yeast mixture.
Fry until golden; flip and brown the other side.
Add a bit of oil if necessary

Enjoy your meal!
Most of the time, I cut them into cubes and add them to my vegetable soup.
If you want to fry tofu, use firm or extra firm tofu.
Tofu is very very versitile. Anything you can do with chicken, you can do with tofu and more...
Here are a few suggestions, I'd also try searching google or yahoo for "tofu recipes".
Silken:
smoothie (yummy!)
soup (think creamy tomato)
add it to a bean dip
Firm:
fry it up (it's really good!)
drench it in teriyaki (wild oats market does this, excellent)
toss it into a salad
try it with a stirfry
etc =)
enjoy
