Vegan alternative to oyster sauce?!

Question: I have just been given a vegetarian and vegan cookbook and it has oyster sauce in one the recipes?! Last time I checked oysters were animals! Anyway, does anyone know what I can use instead as the recipe (aside from this one ingredient) sounds really yummy. It's a tofu and noodle soup. Thanks.

They do make a vegetarian oyster sauce with mushrooms as opposed to oysters. Someone should ask the flexis why the Asians, who, according to the flexis, eat fish and seafood and call themselves vegetarians, remove the oysters from the sauce to make it "vegetarian".

For regular oyster sauce, it's oysters, not oyster mushrooms. At least in the bottle that's sitting in front of me.

Ingredients: Sugar, Oyster Extract, Salt, Modified Corn Starch, Caramel Color, Yeast Extract, Wheat Flour, Soy Sauce (water, soybeans, wheat and salt), Oyster Flavor, Acetic Acid, Disodium Isonate adn Xanthan Gum.

Thanks for asking. My unopened bottle expired in 2005...LOL

oyster sauce in asian cooking is not always made from the seafood oysters....its usually made from oyster mushrooms (check your label) and is completely safe for vegan/vegetarian lifestyles.

By oysters they mean the mushroms. You can find them in your local Asian market.

That does sound yummy! I'm making a tofu noodle soup tonight too!

Firstly to most people on here who don't have a clue it DOES have Oysters in it not oyster mushrooms real actual fishy oysters.

I buy a sauce called vegetarian stir fry sauce made by Lee Kum Kee you can by it from any Chinese supermarket. That one is made with mushrooms

There is oyster sauce and there is also vegetarian oyster sauce that is usually flavored with mushrooms. Almost every large Asian grocer has one. I've seen at least six different brands.

Teryaki sauce. You can buy it from supermarkets or chinese/japanese food shops.
