My sprouts ...... sigh.... how am I messing them up?!

Question: I bought some mung beans and thought I would start sprouts because sprouts at our store are moldy. SO ... I covered the sprouts in filtered water and a papertowel and put them in the cabinet. The next day I rinsed them and put them back. NOW ...they are moldy and stink to hog heaven. WHAT am I doing wrong? I just want fresh sprouts with my food.

You have got to have air circulation..or you get mold.
Try a Large Canning Jar, use a knee high(stocking) & it's open lid as a top. Add 1tbs. Mung beans warm(not hot) water let soak a few hours(4 or so) Strain water out, sat jar with opening at an angle down so air flows in. Rinse the beans 2 time every day ~ REPEAT..etc.
After the beans have sprouted, continue until the have 2 leaves on them, then sit the jar in indirect sunlight for a few hours to "green up" the plants. Put in a plastic ontainer with a paper towel in the bottom..store in fridge. Eatting with in the week.

This is where I getting most of my sprouting supplies. I always have 2 or 3 different kinds of sprouts working on my counter.

Slainté (to your health)

sounds like they were too wet and too warm for too long

when you drain them, make sure that it's standing up in a bowl or something and it stays there. also, they need to have air, so make sure that the mesh is clear. and ensure that they do not get too warm. you need it warm enough to let them germinate, but only that.

good luck sprouting

Are you familiar with mason jars?they have lids that come in 2 parts....use the screw part to secure a screen or some other mesh on to the jar....place your mung beans in there and rinse and drain twice a day...this works well with all sprouts.

here there's a step by step guide to sprouting
