I want to become a vegetarian, but what would I eat?!

Question: I was raised vegetarian until I was 9, but it doesn't mean I ever learned how to cook. I just need some general advice.

If you want to, do it :) It made me feel so good, and you've asked questions about it before so you seem like you really want it

It can be a little tough at first.

Get some basics down, find your staples. Are you still eating eggs and dairy? If you are, it's a little easier. I will give suggestion without eggs and dairy, but incorporate them if you still eat them.

In the mornings, you want something like whole wheat bread, peanut butter and jam, oatmeal, fruit smoothies (there are all kinds of recipes online). (you can make tofu scramblies, recipe online or eggs)

The reason that people say eat whole wheat is because it has protein and lots of fiber....you want both of those.

Just like pasta, when you eat pasta, eat whole wheat (it doesn't cook the same, I leave it in the hot water off the element after it's almost done and it softens well).

For lunches, you should hit all the food groups, I like having quinoa (become friends with this grain, it is a full protein and so good, kinda like rice, but better) with veggies, some tofu, a salad....or soup and bread, or chili (I make a lot of this stuff and freeze it so its easy), pasta and veggies

Eat nuts, trail mix and fruit during the day. You can make some really great sandwiches, with olives, tomatoes, vegan or dairy cheese, grilled veggies, hot peppers, hummus, peppers....

Veggies or pita bread and hummus is really great (nutritious and delicious) :)

Umm, tofu can be made all kinds of ways, crumble it, chop it, cutlets...there are lots of tofu recipes, I like simple ones, fried in hossein sauce with veggies....that sort of thing. Or shake and bake (I used breadcrumbs and herbs then bake or fry it)

Pita pizzas, I always have some frozen pita bread in my freezer and a jar of pasta sauce. You throw on some but up veggies and vegan or dairy cheese and pop that into the oven...awesome.

There are fun faux meats out there too, and I don't buy them often, but sometimes it's fun to have veggie dogs and veggie burgers, Chick'N nuggets, deli meats...I like making sweet potato fries in the oven to go with any of these

See, you eat all kinds of things. What I loved was not making dinners that revolve around meat....that's what people do, a "chicken sandwich" and Steak and potatoes....I find it liberating :)

Good luck...take it slow...go veggie 2-3 times a week for while if you aren't sure. And don't worry if you go to the dark side :) once in a while, some people do it and they regret it so much it just gets them down, just go at your own pace, it's a personal journey :)

Do some research and understand why you want this, people might throw negative comments your way....and if you are solid in your decision, it will just roll right off ya!

Good luck soon-to be-fellow-veggie :)
(I am very pro-veg...I believe in it 100%)

Enjoy the wholesome goodness of carrots.

nothing lol

sweet patatoes with brown shugar and sugar

theres tons of vegetarian recipes online, just google them.

Are you vegetarian or vegan? There is a difference. Vegetarian means you just don't eat meat of any sort. Vegan means you don't eat any animal products at all, including cheeses, milks, eggs and products which may use animal by-products. Either way, veggie or vegan, there are loads of recipes you can find which are really good. Just look up vegan recipes online and you'll find a ton.

Lots of people say you need to learn to cook your basic vegetables before doing anything else. I taught myself through cookbooks, but can only really suggest vegan ones since I was a junk food vegetarian.

If you want to learn how to cook, I'd suggest Veganomicon. In the beginning of the book it has sections explaining all the various utensils and pans, beans, various chef speak, how to cook vegetables, explains all the various grains.. All of Isa's (And Terry's) books are good. Yellow Rose Recipes is supposed to be very good as well.

If you want to learn for free, I'd suggest more food blogs rather than blindly going for the recipes. Veganyumyum.com, blog.fatfreevegan.com, havecakewilltravel.com, pamelacooks.blogspot.com, veganmenu.blogspot.com, www.yellowroserecipes.com, theurbanhousewife.blogspot.com. Just search around.

all vedges.especially green leaf ones.they are called free.because they are not high in calories and high in fibre

good for you! - I am proud of you for taking the steps. look it an't gone be pretty and an't easy. but you will be healthier stronger, and the best ever. so just do it! stop eating the crap! stop eating meat!

Go and be strong and sexy!

Plan your meals. + there are loads of faux meats, try them too. and most of this stuff you can find in your local food store. -

1) Breakfast: cereal, toast, bagel, fruit etcs.. - this covers your daily carbs, better to have carbs in the morning versus at night.

2) Mid morning: yogurt, apple, protein bar. this will give you energy

3) Lunch: veggie sandwich, grilled veggies, veggie soup with lots of beans - you'll get your proteins and with the veggies, get your "a,b,c,d,e" vitamins.

4) Dinner: big spinach salad, or a leafy green salad, with a main course veggie dish. the salad covers your iron and more protein, with great vitamins. - b12

The main course veggie dish, - you can basically have what you want as along as it not to heavey in crabs. like don't eat loads and loads of paste or bread. but a little is good!

For ideas for recipes go on-line and there are loads of healthy free veggie recipes!

You can eat grains, vegetables, fruit, soy, honey, dairy, eggs, and fish. (Of course not all vegetarians eat fish, but some do. It's a huge debate with vegetarians, like honey is with vegans.)
If you go vegan, you can eat grains, vegetables, fruit, and soy. Vegans don't eat meat (including fish), dairy, eggs, honey, etc.
