Vegetarian looking to lose weight *SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY, PLEASE*?!
Answers: So I'm fairly sure this is a common question, but I need help losing weight! I am a female, teenage, vegetarian, about 5'4 and 155 lbs. I know that I am overweight (or close to it) and am a vegetarian for ethical reasons. My goal is about 130 lbs by June and a final goal of somewhere about 120 lbs. I have attempted a diet before and obviously they have not worked. Mostly I just have issues with keeping up and giving into cravings. I am currently in school and find it hard to exercise and eat right. I would particularly like advice on quick and effective exercises that I can do, mostly for my thighs and stomach although I know that it is impossible to spot train. Additionally, I really need some quick, easy, healthy, and if possible, cheap vegetarian meals since I am new to this as of about 4 months ago. Any serious answers are welcome and thank you all so much in advance!!! Personal experience answers would be greatly appreciated! : ]
The simnplset way to lose weight is to increase your claorie output while decreasing you calorie input. Eat less, sweat more.
There are no effective "quick ways" to lose weight other than staving yourself. And starvation only leads to frustration and monstrous cravings and binge eating. And quick results usually means quick relapses the so called "yo-yo" syndrome. The best way is a gradual decrease through balanced diet and exercise. How far is your school from your house? If it is doable, you can walk to and from school instead of taking a bus or driving. Snack on fruits instead of chips and pop. Always have a full breakfast to stop the mid morning cravings. Then a have a full lunch to keep you going until the afternoon. Then have a healthy snack like dried fruits, nuts, berries and such. I don't really know your personal food tastes or preference so I cannot really give you specifics. Vary your foods so that you have diffrent textures and flavors. Personally I go this way because familiar texture helps stop my cravings for foods that are otherwise missing from what I am eating. plan your meals for the week and stick with it. If you can consult a dietician even better.
As for exercise, do what you can. Don't burn yourself out. A 10 minute brisk walk (walk the dog or just go around the block) is better than nothing. There are enough sources on-line or in magaznes that can help you out with specific easy-for-beginners exercise routines.
add some filling tofu to your diet and aviod bedtime snack and dont sit so much
To start the thing that would help you most as far as I can offer is to walk. NOT LEISURELY. Try getting a couple of those small weights (2lb. like at target). I know it sounds stupid but when I work out I have given up music while doing it. However, hold on before you say "whatever" and let me finish, I instead use audiobooks to occupy my mind. When I have to sit for an hour and a half and ride the excercise bike my mind gets bored and I start thinking about "when I can finish." That defeats the longevity of the workout from the only place that can ruin it... the mind. So what I do is down load books that are on such things as Particle physics, quantum mechanics, dimensions, etc. Things that get my wheels turning. What I listen to probably won't work for you but find something that interests you to a point of facination and makes you think abstractly and in a problem solving manner. It works because my mind begins to bend on whatever I am listening to and I start thinking so hard that I lose track of time and have to make myself stop the exercise. It's never boring and I look forward to my time in the gym. Strange yes, but as you will know if you've ever had that one class in school that went by in, well, it seemed five minutes then you understand that this works on the same theory. Whatever is your "theoretical physics," Load it up and go walk. Just remember to look for traffic when you do... it can sneak up on you. :)
Good luck.
You should try to walk for at least 30 minutes a day. You can take 3 ten minute walks or 1 thirty minute walk. This will help keep you in shape. You should try taking a sip of water after every bite of food you take. This is a healthy way to fill you up and keep you hydrated. You should also try doing other exercise when you can. You might want to purchase a pedometer. It counts how many steps you take. THe average person should take 10,000 steps every day. Good luck and I wish you the BEST!!!!!
Stay away from all alcohol. Drink two gallons of water a day. Spot training is a myth. Learn to jump rope to your favorite music. Run on a treadmill in cycles... walk one minute, run your hardest for the next minute, and then back to one minute. Progresso lentil soup is filling but if you eat eggs, add two hard boiled egg whites. Also, MuscleMilk is good for burning fat. The fat in it is good fat and no animals involved. Snack on cashews. Now, with all of that in mind, start hitting the weights. The girls you see that are huge are on roids. If you want more since this is limited to space, my email is at kreiteljim@gmail.com. Go to Target or Walmart. Look in the frozen foods section. They should have brands such as smart diet, morning star, and boca. These are meat-free, vegetarian, tvp foods. You should find hotdogs, bacon, sausage patties, sausage links, ground beef, corndogs, chicken nuggets, chicken strips, chicken patties, beef patties, garden burger patties, and meatballs. We usually mix those meat substitutes with stirfry, fried diced potatoes, mixed veggies, rice, and pasta.
This isn't going to be a very long answer, because you've already gotten a lot of good ones, but...
You may be eating too much dairy products, which really don't help keep weight off. (Think about greasy cheese, for example) Since you're vegetarian for ethical reasons, maybe you should think about taking some steps toward being vegan? Good luck!
Don't do something extreme, won't work after you have stopped.
Try something small, walk more instead of sitting.
Eat less oily, deep fried food. Go for other types of cooking, steaming, etc. but DON'T purposely cut down the quantity, else you will feel hungry and Want to eat more later.
Try to eat less carbohidrate and replace with other food contains protein/vegetables.
I was having a big tummy, due to eating too much carbohidrat and sitting too long in a day. I manage to reduce it by less carb, and moving around more when working or studying.
More exercise for me will just make me more hungry later. Means I will eat double after that. Try some exercise that will particularly reduce your tummy and thigh, but not making you tired. Or you may check out some DIY massage to tone down your thigh and tummy.
Oh ya, and drink more water than you usually did, I'm not saying drink a lot at 1 time, which won't work, but drink a cup or 2 more frequently. It helps to detox, and when you have enough water in your body, your body won't reserving water much inside it that will makes you look fat. And more water is good for pass motion, avoid constipation.
There's no such thing as "quick and effective". Losing weight takes time and commitment. Don't try to take the easy way out. Spend some time exercising each day, keep track of your food, and control your cravings. Within a couple of months you will start seeing results.
Hey!
I've been a vegetarian for 14 years now and have also lost a ton of weight (30 lbs) over the past year, so hopefully I can help you out.
First, be really careful with a quick vegetarian diet, it's so so easy to fall into refined carbs and cheese- you cannot be healthy this way. A good vegetarian diet is a mix of complex carbs, lots of fresh veggies and vegetarian proteins.
The first two are easy, but the protein can be hard. First, there's this great video on this site I work with that explains vegetarian proteins really well: http://capessa.com/members/storyactions....
Without protein, you won't lose weight- you will be hungry and not able to build muscle. It doesn't have to be that complicated. A few quick meals that might help:
- Salads with canned beans. I love tomatoes, artichokes and garbanzo beans with a bit of fat free italian dressing and garlic
- Drain some black beans and cook them with some salsa, chili powder and cumin and water. This makes a great black bean soup that's fat free and filling. You can also serve over brown rice.
- Carmelize onions (just cook them in a tiny bit of olive or sesame oil until they are brown and sweet. Add soy sauce, lemon juice, pre packaged broccoli and tofu.
Whatever you do, eat protein and fresh veggies with every meal!
Another great snack is frozen edamame- high in protein and great for those cravings.
Good luck to you! ~Lauren
