Can animals be vegetarians?!

Question: I know for a fact my dog loves meat. She loves chicken, pork, steak or any kind of meat. But I was just curious do some animals like humans don't like meat? I mean I know it sounds silly and all. I heard like zebra's and giraffe's only eat grass. Not sure how true it is but can dogs be vegetarian?

Just to clear up the dog issue. Dogs cannot thrive on vegan food. A dogs diet consists of 80% meat, 10% vetables, 5% organ meat and the rest is bone, oils, and herbs.

A dog can however just get by on a vegan menu. Meaning they are getting a bare minimum of nutrition. Nothing gives them the 100% nutrition as raw meat combined with the right vegetables, etc.

Herbivores eat only plants.

i don't think dogs can be vegetarian they need the protein and fat from meat...im sure it helps their coats in some way

herbivores. its a classification of animals that primarily eats plants.

Some dogs have severe allergies and HAVE to a vegetarian diet. So yes, its true. They sell vegetarian dog food at the local pet store where I live.

yes. not in the same sense as a human being though. we know that we are making a concious decision to stop consuming meat. animals that just eat organic foods, such as deer and rabits, aren't making a mindful choice, it's just their preference. some animals aren't given the proper teeth and so forth to consume flesh. we are inteligent in our choice not to eat meat. animals are more or less forced to make that choice, or prefer such a lifestyle.

dogs can but cats need taurine available only in meat.

They can. And deer can be carnivores:

I believe dogs can but i'm not very sure on that, they are counted as omnivores for some but you would really have to research about that. I don't think that cat's and certain other animals can though, rabbits of course can be but they can turn very cannabalistic sometimes.

Many, many animals are naturally herbivores. Dogs are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant and animal foods. Dogs can thrive on well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets and there are commercial dog foods available that accomplish that. I'm vegan, but my dog is an omnivore - my boyfriend is a meat eater so if we're buying meat anyway it seems to make the most sense to me to feed the dog what he'd probably choose for himself. If it was just me, I'd rethink that and look more carefully into vegan dog foods.

obviously you cant get a vegetarian lion for obvious reasons, but animals at the bottom of the food chain are vegetarians. amongst some others

All I can think about is the lion on futurama that they said they taught to eat tofu and all its fur was falling out...

Some animals bodies are made to live without any meat, other animals need the nutrients in meat to live.

Dogs can be vegetarian. Cats can't. Feed the dog eggs to make up for lost protein and a nice shiny coat!
