What made you become a Vegan?!

Question: Even though I was a vegetarian I was still naive when it came to dairy farming processes. Then my parents moved to the country and now live next door to a dairy/milk farm. Hearing the calfs aged only 2-3 days only scream all night for their mothers, I cried for them and thats when I decided to become Vegan.

I too became vegan, and i agree and understand your feelings.

To KlM 78_20 - you wrote. "no amount of arguing will convince me that they are equal to humans" -

gosh they used that same train of thought for slavery and women. - Remember when women were not allowed to vote! and just because of the color of your skin you were worked to death for the "white master".

I wish one day too have the experience of understanding that animals do have soul. You are not god, and you are not able to say who gets a soul and who does not!

ALSO WHERE DO YOU THINK EMOTION COMES FROM, - INSTINCT!

sounds like your placing human emotions into the animal world, which is not a realistic ideology

me too, I didn't want to take life for my own pleasure! It's difficult being vegan but getting easier.

Good luck.

Many vegans still do not understand that cow's milk is for baby cows. Too much of it in humans creates problems. The is a big part of the problem with kids in first world countries especially the USA. The kids are huge like cows!

Same really, I couldnt stand the thought that by eating a piece of meat i had been secondry to the killing of an animal or cause pain and suffering. Great veggie website... www.goveg.com

Because I have severe food allergies and intolerances which are more easily controlled with a vegan diet.

See now thumbs down comes from a veggier-than-thou person. Who thinks that because my vegan diet didnt come around the same way as theres its selifsh. Im sorry is wanting to stay alive selifish? My veganism has the same result as yours. I do not support animal cruelty through my diet, I do not buy leather or other animal textiles, I do not purchase items tested on animals

I was lacto-ovo vegetarian for a couple of years and slowly became more aware that there was something wrong in eating animal products as well. I researched dairy farming and 'free-range' egg systems on the internet and became vegan the same way. I think it was the brochures on the Animal Aid website that tipped it for me. The internet is an invaluable resource for animal rights.

To the omnivores answering this question: if you actually hold the belief that non-human animal's lives are less important than your taste buds, then I urge you to start a discussion here to explore your views, rather than posting unfunny, unhelpful, unintelligent and unreasoned one line answers unbefitting of your average chimpanzee. Honestly, whoever said that humans were more intelligent than other animals?

common sense

I'm an omnivore in the vegan section because I came here looking for recipes and cooking tips and got drawn into ideology and misinformation. I grew up on a dairy farm and fed each and every one of those calves. I guarantee you, that was not "screaming" you heard. Calves bawl loudly, but if they were "screaming" you'd really know. I've never thought about bawling calves as cruel, actually. It's interesting to hear that point of view. But, yes, I do believe that animals are less intelligent than humans and I believe that humans have souls and animals don't. I get this belief from growing up around animals 24/7 from when I was born till I went to college. Animals are important and should be treated well, and are much better off on most farms than they would be in the wild. Living on a farm, they recieve veterinary care, in the wild, many more die of starvation and diseases. Cows exhibit much less intelligence and emotion than a dog or a cat, they are very instinct driven animals, and I find it inappropriate to ascribe emotion to what they do, I would call it instinct. Also, many times cows will reject their calf. The result is the same as what you heard next to the dairy farm. I respect your decision to go vegan, but I must defer. I feel that you might label me as some sort of evil or heartless person, but I respectfully disagree with you there also. I love animals, but no amount of arguing will convince me that they are equal to humans, sorry.

The way the dairy cows are treated and the egg chickens. The cows get mastitis and get kicked, tortured.learning about the traces of blood and pus in the milk.Hormones and antibiotics that are making people obese and unhealthy.

For the environment, my health, and mostly for the animals.
