Will you chase that cat away?!

Question: I just read on an answer that a "true vegan" will not keep pets, cats/dogs/companion animals because it is akin to slavery.
When a homeless cat comes to your house wanting some food and some affection do you as a "true vegan" close your door on the animal.
Cats are well known for "choosing" their owners. Not what I personally would call slavery.
I'm not convinced either my dog thinks of himself as a slave- he's part of our "pack".
What do others think about this?

I'm a vegan, and I'm uneasy about keeping pets - or rather the 'pet trade' that breeds them for that purpose.

I have a cat, though - rescued from bad situation. I see no contradiction.

When someone comes on this site pompously telling vegans what 'true' vegans would do, it's usually time to call BS, invariably the people who do this are not vegan ; for instance the two who have informed us in the past that 'true' vegans would allow themselves to die in the event of life-threatening illness or accident rather than accept medication tested (by law) on animals. BS

Ashley is not a vegan, btw, s/he's a troll trying to make vegans look silly- s/he has admitted as much in his/her posts before, although we all knew already. Check out his/her 'what would you do?' posts.

Edit** Oh, it's Ashley V - oh well, same applies.

Edit** I didn't know that Captain H, although I live in the UK; I knew they couldn't be displayed in shop windows any more and I had a vague idea things were stricter in Scotland than elsewhere, but I thought you could still buy kittens and puppies through pet shops. That's good! When did that law come into force?

Edit** oh, and btw, you say you are quoting a VEGAN who posted on this site. Gina C isn't a vegan; check out her Q&A if you're unsure

I've been thinking back, and the last time I saw cats in a pet shop window was late 70s.

I still think Scotland beat the rest of the UK to this though - well done you lot! Report It

a "true vegan" will not keep pets, cats/dogs/companion animals because it is akin to slavery ...

    ???

oh please . its just the opposite . tame animals do not signify slavery !

    IMO having pets is immoral.

I'm a vegan and have never heard that one before.
I don't thnk my dog is a slave, she's part of the family (pack)and gets better treated than most people! Sometimes I feel like her slave, she is very high maintenance!!

Too true, some nights I lovingly prepare her meals that include cooked veg and pasta, tinned salmon etc and I'm tucking in to beans on toast! What's that all about!!!

    I'm not vegan, just vegetarian.
I don't agree with pet stores and breeders, but I have two feral barn cats, I got them as kittens.

People are irresponsible....they don't spay and neuter their pets then abandon them. People give their old pets to shelters when they require more help. The pet industry isn't about slaves....it's about irresponsible humans.

The breeding industry is worse. Dog breeders are useless. I think that rescuing a pet (my cat is a rescue, I had to bottle feed from 1 day old, and she was missing some parts when I found her.)

I understand how people might talk about slavery, but until all humans take responsibility, someone has to clean up the mess right?

Actually, my cat thinks I'm HER slave....

To be a vegan is to love all animals, and not abuse them.

I have 4 pets - two dogs and two cats, and I love them. They all came from pretty bad situations. - But now they are in a safe loving home!
