How to go Vegan with Celiac Disease....?!

Question: I am 14 years old and have recently been diagnosed with Celiac Disease and Fructose Malabsorption (meaning I cannot eat fruit), I have been a Vegetarian for 10 years, yep that's right, I was 4 when I started. But my parents make me eat dairy products including milk, cheese etc because they say that I will die young if I don't eat them. But I cannot but think about the cows. Stealing their milk so they cannot provide for their young is just as horrific as eating meat. What can I do? Is it at all possible to go vegan whilst having to eliminate all gluten, fruit and onion? Need some serious help with this question!

There are sites just for vegetarians and vegans with celiac disease. We eat a lot of Indian food and Mexican food because we enjoy beans and rice. These dishes are easy to do without meat. We also do a lot of soups.

Be really careful with pre-made vegetarian products. For example, all Bocca products contain gluten per their web-site. See link below - Amy's now has a GF vegan "burger." Fantastic Foods has quite a few GF products that are also vegetarian such as "Instant Refried Beans."

As long as you can still eat soy, I don't think there's a huge issue. Just eat the usual gluten-free foods - rice breads and such - and replace the dairy with soy and rice-based replacers like rice milk parmesan, soy yogurt, fortified soy milk, and tofu, you can get the usual protein and vitamins you'd get from dairy. They're often fortified with B-12 so that's no problem, either.

I would suggest seeking the advice of health professionals such as a dietition and internist alike. As you are posed with the problem of an autoimmune disorder relating to the digestive system, you will have to be very careful in what you eat. However, I don't believe that you will have to be any more careful on a vegan diet than you would without it. Either way you are going to have to watch everything you put in your mouth. I don't think it impossible to do what you are wanting but I would approach it with caution and certainly the advice of a doctor that has experience in this disease. Anything else would be foolhardy.

Blood-drinking and celiac disease?
(Note: The following is very tentative, pending further research)
One disease which perhaps can cause a desire to drink blood, at least in some people, is celiac syndrome. Furthermore, in extreme cases, it may cause an inability to consume anything except blood -- which is not true of most real-life vampires (in the sense of people with a craving for carcasses). Most vampires can eat normal food, too, with no problem.
