UK vegetarians, any idea what this could be?!

Question: Tonight shopping in Asda we saw a can of vegetable 'sausage' in beans. Looked quite nice, but it WASN'T suitable for vegetarians. Threre were no obvious animal products in there so what could they possibly be? And why did they make vegetarian style meals that aren't suitable? Thanks.

They might be vegetable and meat mixed together, rather than vegetarian sausages.

Or it might be a flavouring or colouring added. Look out for E120, gelatine or glycerol (which is sometimes plant origin, sometimes animal)

It might even be halal, but not veggie. My local Asda does quite a lot of halal, although pork is unlikely anyway...

If in doubt, contact Asda. They should have a contact link on their website.

The meat could be in the E numbers, if there are any. I'm a vegetarian.

Thats strange. Are you sure you checked for the Vegetarian sign properly. Its quite easy to miss, happened to me the other day. If its definitely not there then try to avoid it.

veggie sausage=

VEGETABLE SAUSAGE

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
3 c Mixed vegetables
- such as artichoke hearts,
- asparagus, mushrooms,
- broccoli or cauliflower
1 c Cooked spinach -- chopped
2 tb Olive oil
2 md Onions -- roughly diced
1/2 c Bread crumbs
3/4 c Egg whites
1/2 ts Ground coriander
1 t Minced garlic
1/2 ts Salt -- or as desired
1/2 ts Ground white pepper
1 t Fresh rosemary leaves -OR-
1/2 ts -Dried rosemary leaves
4 Feet sausage casing

The sausage casing probably since it is the intestine if natural casing..or maybe they used gelatin/type substance as the sauce thickener or used a meat based/powder flavor enhancer.. or maybe an egg product...check the label again carefully

maybe they label them "unsuitable" to avoid a potential lawsuit and jsut allow individuals to mak theri own decfisions or for those who want the sausage taste but without the sausage fat (non vegetarians). a sort of healthy sausage...

"vegetable" sausage is different than "vegetarian" sausage. I have seen vegetarian 'burger', 'sausage' made with soy sauce - frozen as well as canned. These companies make sure that somewhere on the label it says something to the effect "no animal product".
Whethter it is health reason or religious reason or any other reason, you should recheck the label when in doubt. They usually have an address or phone number to check with them about the product.
