Why do vegetarians have to use a meat substitute?...?!
Answers: I dont eat octopus/squid or any form of shell fish?...but I dont need to replace it with a seafood substitute!...So If you dont eat meat?...surely you just omit it from your menu...dont you?
Your being very dogmatic in your view of vegetarianism. I am a natural vegetarian, meaning that I dont like meat. I'm told that I refused to eat it even as a baby. I have tried it as an adult and find it revolting. So not every vegetarian looks for meat tasting substitutes
because they need the protein
Some people like the taste of meat but don't eat it for ethical reasons, so why shouldn't they have the enjoyment of meat replacement products?
Your reasoning is ridiculous.
because they like the taste of meat just dont like to eat animals
I certainly am. I haven't touched the meat substitute stuff in a few months now.
The thing is, if the whole family is having meatballs, sometimes you -do- need a substitute. Or what about stuffed peppers?
It IS a good source of protein, in all honesty... but I do agree with you, too, that it's a bit weird (in it's name, anyway lol). =)
And they have seafood substitute. XD
Some vegetarians dislike the taste of meat and dont supplement it! Others are ethical veggies and even tho like the tatse of meat dont agree with eating animals so will substitute with quorn or whatever. I am neither I like a nice bacon butty. Hope that answers your question.
They don't have to, they choose to. Variety is the spice of life...so long as the variety is in line with the way you choose to live your life and doesn't hurt others in the process.
you dont ahve to ahve meat subsitute, you can ahve BEN, which is beans, eggs and nuts which replace the protien that is missing from their diets.
=)
xx
I wouldnt eat a new born baby, And I certainly wouldnt eat something that looked like one. I really dont understand the reasoning behind vegetarians that eat meat looking replacement products.
We don't have to use a 'meat substitute' - some vegetarians choose to eat products like vegetarian sausages and so on - these are actually a good source of protein. Personally, I like the ones that are not too realistic, but each to their own. You don't need to replace seafood with a seafood substitute because presumably you are eating a balanced diet and not missing anything by not eating seafood. However, vegetarians are missing iron and protein by not eating meat, so we need to get these from other sources, whether it is Quorn products or whatever, or more natural substitutes like beans and pulses. Hope this helps.
yes
Oh, I'd be a liar if I said I didn't like meat- I really do. Before I turned vegetarian/then vegan, I used to eat this Puerto Rican skewer called a bincho- barbequed chunks of pork on a stick- just straight up chunks of meat......
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut- upon realizing those chunks of meat were once a live animal that was most likely abused in life- I will never eat that again.
However, that doesn't take away my want for something that tastes similar- or any other traditional red-blooded American fare or exotic ethnic cuisine- I love cooking and I love things that taste good, and, yes, I love the taste of meat, but just do not wish to put my money towards the practice of inhumane farming and disregard for life.
they prefer to enjoy the taste of meat with out the giltyness of knowing that they have just eaten a anlimal personly i think everyone should eat meat subsitute becuase its better for the world and also they have proven that you do not need meat to have a healthy diet :) x
Vegetarians don't have to, but some choose to. I always enjoyed the taste of certain meats, and meat substitutes let me approximate the flavor and texture without causing suffering to any animals.
And for God's sake, it has nothing to do with PROTEIN! Why will this stupid myth not die? Virtually ALL FOODS HAVE PROTEIN. You do NOT get it just from meat. Most people actually get TOO MUCH protein. You get plenty from eating a balanced vegetarian diet.

It is a grand mistake of people of this age to say or suppose: that flesh affords not only a stronger nourishment, but also more and better than herbs, grains etc.: for the truth is it does yield more stimulation, but not of so firm a substance, nor so good as that which proceeds from the other foods; for flesh has more matter for corruption, and nothing so soon turns to putrefication.
I need no supplement. Although I choose to use Quorn products as I find them a useful to vary my diet and allows me to entertain friends with something they are likely to be more familiar with i.e I can make Chilli, bolognese and stir fry etc.
I use tofu mostly, but sometimes, in that veggie section, I across something and feel like it was made just for me, so I buy it to try....or I used to get those Chick'N nuggets for my guy sometimes as a treat....lol now that I am vegan, I can't eat most and it doesn't bother me.
I do agree that some people do rely on them WAY too much.
:)
They don't
I believe it is because we all need protein in some form or another.
Its for variety. Tell me which vegan can just subsist on plain grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables, legumes?
Variety is the spice of life. Try a garden burger! boca burger, vegan riblets etc etc. Stop eating meat, sure, but that doesn't mean you have to stop eating the vegan meat substitutes as well. Also some people like me, don't eat any form of dairy, milk, eggs, cheese etc etc.
So having some of these meat substitutes is a great blessing to us! you have to think about all people, not just yourself, if you don't like substitutes, fine don't eat them, everybody has freedom of choice.
Some do, some don't. Most of us were meat eaters before we went vegetarian, meaning we're accustomed to certain dishes. Faux meats ease the transition by allowing us to kep eating familiar meals, only without the cruelty. They also allow us to fit in sometimes - I would attract a lot less attention eating a veggie burger at a BBQ than I would eating something completely different from everybody else. I actually eat very little faux meat because I do most of my cooking with whole foods and I just make dishes that don't center around "meat." But we like variety as much as the next person, and sometimes faux meats provide that.
No one ever has to use meat substitute, it's just some people want an easy replacement for their meals that have meat.
I don't like the taste of meat, and to me, meat replacement doesn't really taste like meat, but I like it. I've only had a few meat substitute stuff that reminded me of meat.
It's just for ease. It's not necessary.
I`m vegan, and dislike meat substitutes (soya, quorn, etc), but some vegans and vegetarians do like them. Is it a problem? It`s possible to get all the nutrients needed without using supplements / meat substitutes, just depends on individuals likes/dislikes, I think.
Entirely up to you how you eat!
Your idea of meat substitute, and mine, are likely to be poles apart! lol
well... they need protein, they could just eat tofu instead.
They do it for a variety of reasons:
1) want the taste but don't want the real thing
2) use to eat it and it helps disspate the feeling of being "deprived". Also helps during the transistion phase
3) because they want to
4) because they can
5) (fill in the blank)
Anybody can do anything they want as long as it is reasonably ethical and not illegal. They certainly don't have to explain why or get permission.
Your analogy does not apply by the way
NO. I use NO meat or seafood, fish substitute.
1) most are made of Soy, Wheat, Dairy or Eggs all which I am allergic to.
2) Are high in fats
3) Certainly more expensive than fresh Veggie, Fruits grains etc.
Even before I found out my allergies I rarely used them, I have no taste for beef, though kind of liked Boca Chicken Nuggets.
I think 1 reason they are used is because we have been "trained" to think of a meal as being a Protien(Meat/Fish/Poultry) with side of Veggies & or a salad. So using the faux meats gives us that look & ideal we are use too. If you are in transistion they are a easy way to make Veggie meals, but as you grow into being a Veggie or Vegan they certainly can be put aside for more interesting food choices.
Because I like the taste and texture of meat substitute's. Eating meat would make me choke
They don't have to. I don't.
im vegetarian
its for protein
and because
id rather eat a meat substitute a.k.a quorn
than eat salad for the rest of my life
get it now?
and btw you dont have seafood substitute
coz you still eat other things such as meat
which fills you up.
because they don't wanna die!!!!!
The substitute meat is called Tofu. They eat it to balance there protein. Meat is a important part of the food web but the vegetarians don't like to eat anything that was once alive or would've had life like chicken eggs.
