Vegetarians SHOULDNT EAT FISH?!
I just wondered how people felt about people saying they are vegetarian and still eating fish. This may sound stupid but i get so angry :( like if people say they are vegetarian and eat fish i get mad, and say its an insult. I mean I sacrafice eating every meat for my beleifs and people are claiming to be vegetarian when they are not. I dont see how its different to me saying I am a vegetarian but eat beef. I just get annoyed especially if the reason that people are doing it is for animals sake.
My friend says she loves animals so is a vegetarian yet she eats fish, and it gets me angry at her and we have had debates before about it. she makes me feel like the baddy but i just get so angry :@ .. :( anyway yeh bit random but just wondered what other people thought...
ps. LOL if vegetarians were supposed to eat fish why dont fish fingers say suitable for vegetarians .. aha.
Answers: Right, Im a vegetarian (a full one - dont eat fish, sweets with gelatine, yoghurts etc..)

I TOTALLY understand where you're coming from. I have a friend who claims to be vegetarian as well BUT she eats fish because she feels bad/weird/who knows to be the 'odd one out' when she has dinner with non-vegetarians.
Yet, I have non-vegetarian friends who understand the concept of being vegetarian/vegan and being vegan, that means a lot to me. So it does annoy me vastly that someone who proudly annouces to the whole world about being vegetarian and a huge animal lover....eating fish. But I figure there's only so much I can do without sounding pushy and bitchy. So I add in my two cents whenever I can and hope she's doing this for the right reasons and not because she thinks it's 'cool'.
Yea, ranting as well.. :x
So, nice rant. Your energy is misplaced. Other peoples diets are their own and what they call themselves is their own business. You are technically right and your friend isnt really a vegetarian, but is it worth being right to be angry and mad at your friend?
Vegan concept originated in india. I may tell u there are diverse type of vegans
1 ...Who do not eat, fish meat, egg any thing which has life. The concept took roots as peoplle did not know plants also have life and also sex life
2. There are veggie eggies , but take eggs provided it is layed by harmone injections with out the help of he-hen . As no sex is involved in production of eggs it is called vegetarian egg.
3... Ther are veggies who do not any vegetable which is sub soil like tubers like potatoes , onions etc
4.. In eastern part of India Bengal veggies take fish as it is considered water flower (Jal Pushap).
5... There are veggies who do not take milk product as it has origin in animal bones
And finaly the joke , they do not think any thing wrong in sucking human blood in exploitation and deprivation
I don't care what people eat, thats entirely thier choice, but its not thier choice to redefine dictionary words at will.
I wish people would not say they are vegetarian when they are not.
A vegetarian, as defined by the vegetarian society in 1847 is:
"A person who does not eat meat, fish, poultry nor slaughter by-products"
There is no need to corrupt or misuse a word so widely understood by such a simple definition
Here is what the 3 LARGEST vegetarian groups in the world say about eating fish:
http://www.vegsoc.org/fish , since 1847
http://www.ivu.org/faq/definitions.html , since 1908
http://www.peta.org/about/faq-veg.asp , since 1980
And here is what the largest veggie group in Europe say...

I share your frustration, but you cannot solve all the worlds problems. You could print out the definitions from the above links and ask her why she thinks they are all wrong and she is right.
If people mis-use or redifine other words its wrong, and yet somehow it seems the word vegetarian does not count.
Start calling a car a "tree", or call your house a "gallon of gas". If she looks at you puzzled just say "I'm redefining words". I bet she says "you can't do that"...at which point you smile and quietly walk away.
Of course you are right. A vegetarian does not eat fish, and your friend should not claim to be one.
But many people became vegetarian after finding out about what animals in factory situations are subjected to.
If a person is opposed to the TREATMENT of the animal, rather that the consumption, the reasoning would be that the fish (shrimp, oyster, clam...) wasn't tortured prior to its demise.
And remember, your friend is still doing a good thing for the planet. It's the farming of meat, not seafood, that is contributing to global warming.
I HATE it when people say they're vegetarian when they eat fish - fish are still meat, just because they live in the sea and don't have to spend their life stuck in a dark shed before being slaughtered.
People who eat fish are NOT vegetarian.
Many vegetarians see that Jesus eat fish in New Testment stories so they think its okay. So I guess they don't realize that an animal that swims is still an animal. My husband refuses to try anything that swims and he grew up vegetarian but started eating meat while dating a girl before he meet me.
The vegetarians I know don't eat fish. When I told them at the hospital that delivered my children I was vegetarian they gave me a menu with fish on it with a note (if vegetarian accepts)!
So what's your point, that you feel violated because someone else has a different diet? Is it better in your eyes to eat all types of meat or just fish? Each individual makes their own decision on what they want to eat. "I'm vegetarian but I eat fish" is a perfectly valid diet. Get over yourself.
Until recently, there really wasn't a word for people who still eat some meat, but strive to reduce their meat/poultry/fish intake. Flexitarian is becoming more popular and really should be used for those who eat only fish. However, it's really pointless to rant about people not using terms the way we think they should. It's kind of like someone who claims to be a certain religion, yet not following what that religion says - frustrating, but not worth fighting over.
