Many nonhuman animals rely on flesh to survive, humans don't. A vegan diet is healthier far healthier for humans, you cut the risk of CVD and many forms of cancer in half or more. Read some science.

Humans are the only species that can consider the moral pros and cons of their actions - the only thing that truly sets us apart from other animals is also the thing that gives us the moral responsibility to not exploit animals (human or nonhuman).

We can't blame nonhuman carnivores for eating flesh. They wouldn't survive without it, and it would hardly be sensible for them to evolve empathy - they'd feel too bad about hunting their prey and die out.

However, humans can live healthier lives without flesh and animal products, and more importantly, can see why this is much more morally correct.

It's funny, many humans consider themselves superior to nonhuman animals because they're different, but defend their own practices by comparing themselves to nonhuman animals.

It's not logical to argue that it's natural so therefore it is right, either. It is not natural to wear clothes, take medication, or indeed post questions about why you don't get vegetarians and vegans on Yahoo Answers. It is natural for humans to rape each other and kill each other for territory, but that's hardly very constructive, is it? What is natural is not necessarily what is moral. Forget nature and embrace ethics.

Indeed, what you're *doing* can't be healthily, for your body or your karma.

Veganism is my moral baseline; I did it right after finding out how all nonhuman animals are treated in the industry, before knowing that it was far, far healthier. I guess that’s my reward! :D

I hope the good responses have prompted more thought on this subject, and thanks for picking my answer! Report It

  • It's a personal, and healthy, decision as long as you do it right.

    it is their choice

some animals can *only* eat other animals. They don't have a choice, it's how they survive.

Whereas us humans can eat meat *or* greens, we can survive on either and some people prefer to take the green road.

I don't see why people make such a huge fuss about vegetarians n' Vegans

Not all animals eat other animals, obviously. Plus, animals don't have the intelligence to know other sources of the vitamins and minerals they get from meat, nor are they available to them. We do. It's completely healthy, if you do it properly.

I'm not one, but i can understand the benefits. You should do your research before making empty statements.

What don't you get? We just don't think it's right to ill treat animals their whole lives just to kill them for our pleasure. Basically, we don't agree with murder.

Not healthy? Are you aware that the government of some countries such as Canada officially advise people to switch to a vegetarian diet because it's healthier? What's not healthy is messing up animals so badly with horrific living conditions and giving them junk to eat so that they end up developing illnesses such as mad cow.

    Go vegan!

It is their choice. They choose to try to be kind to animals, supporting the environment to make more food for the hungry and creating better health with less disease and longer life for themselves (less heart disease, less cancer, etc).

    i don't eat meat but i don't class my self as a vegetarian,for me it's i just don't like the taste

There's nothing to "get" - it's a personal choice, sometimes a religious one. You pointed out that animals eat other animals, right? Maybe they think that too and just don't want to act like animals. Either way it shouldn't bother you, the less meat others eat, the more there is for you! ;-p

But the animals you eat don't eat precisely other animals. Go hunt a lion and eat it. Besides, I get to choose and I choose not to eat animals, what carnivores do is their nature and their business.

Animals don't necessarily have compassion like people do - animals are just following their instincts in order to survive. People don't have to follow their instincts in order to survive because we have far greater knowledge and more compassion than animals do.

That's ok, you don't need to 'get' us. Just respect our choices and decisions, as we do yours.

I'm vegan, I chose to be so to minimise my contribution to animals' suffering and exploitation - that's all.

I have that choice; a carnivorous animal doesn't. I don't need to eat meat, so I choose not to.

I eat a healthy diet; I recognise that vegetarian and omnivorous diets can be very healthy too.

No big deal really, is it?

    each to their own
but even i think that meat is harmful to your health
while veggies are just the opposite

Yes, there are animals who eat other animals--they're called carnivores. And there is a world of difference between the lioness who hunts down the pride's dinner and what humans do to animals who are exploited for food.

Humans do not need to eat meat to be healthy, nor do they need milk from a COW (or past infancy, for that matter), or eggs. Those are lies perpetrated by the industries who exploit the animals for meat, dairy, and eggs.

What I don't get are people who know just how bad meat is, who know the horrors of the animal exploitation industries and still eat meat--like Eric Scholsser.

You can achieve a very healthy diet without meat. Anything that is beneficial to our bodies that comes from an animal can be found in non-meat sources of food.

Personally, I am a vegetarian because I know that many animals that are raised for their meat suffer greatly and unnecessarily. The environment is also affected in a negative way. Cow waste often seeps into the ground and runs into our rivers, lakes, etc. and this can have harmful effects on our drinking water and aquatic life. Many acres of forest are depleted in order to set up grazing fields for livestock.

Animals eat other animals because that is their instinct.

    :) Hey there...

I think your lines can actually be directed to meat eaters.
"You people are aware that animals eat other animals right?
What your doing cant be very healthy."

    Just joking around....

I am born vegetarian, which means I have never tasted any kind of meat in my life. I dont think I have had health issues any different from meat eaters. And except for a cold or flu, I have not had anything real serious at all.

So being a vegetarian is a choice. You can do it for your health, you can do it because you love animals. Whatever the reasons are, I dont think it is an unhealthy choice. I am glad I am born vegetarian, and even if I weren't one, I would have become one eventually....for health, for my love of animals.
    :)

My wife is a Registered Dietitian with a Masters Degree in nutrition; we're both vegetarian. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure she has a better idea of what's healthy than you do.

Animals act on instinct; human beings have the capacity for mercy. That's what vegetarianism is all about.

If vegetarianism is not the philosophy you want to live by, then don't.

well animals dont make other animals go into transport trucks then beat them with crowbars then hang them upside down then slit there throats. i never seen that on animal planet have you?
besides its healthy why do you think many people are giving meat up ONLY FOR THERE HEALTH!
    whats not to get?

good grief, there's ignorance for you !

You just do not seem to have given this one seconds thought.

Do you see "other animals" building large factory cages in which to house thier prey ?

as you for your last sentance, thats laughable, no evidence at all, just a random comment.

They are aware of that and they can be as healthy as anyone else. The simplicity of your question shows you don't know too much about either.

It's their choice and it doesn't effect you in any way shape or form unless you are feeling guilty for some reason.

Why can't it be healthy? Because you say so? Well, sorry, but dieticians and nutritionists disagree with you.

My diet is most likely healthier than yours (meaning my own personal diet, it is very possible to be a vegetarian and just eat junk food). The difference between us is I do not care what you eat and will not judge you for your choices. It is a personal matter, and I respect your right to eat what you choose even if you don't respect mine.

    I don't get meat eaters/omnivores

You people are aware that what you are eating is really toxic right? What you're doing cant be very healthy.

I don't get them either, join our club!

You don't need to "get them". What do you care if someone chooses to be a vegetarian or vegan? How, exactly, does it affect you?

Actually it is healthy. A cardiologist in my area opened a Vegan restaurant because he got tired of opening people up and seeing the damage meat does to the heart.

    its my choice
    and i believe its healthy
    dont be jealous

If all of us turn pure vegetarians....and all animals turn pure vegetarians....will there be anything green left on earth....a pure vegetarian will have to eat tons of greens and vegetables
