Why is it that gelatin is allowed to be used in products?!
I just bought some of those conversation hearts and was ticked off to learn there is gelatin in that too. Geez, all the damn treats contain that garbage.
Im just wondering why its allowed to be used
Answers: Wouldnt a person be grossed out to eat it if they read what was realy in it?

It's cheap and a stabilizer and a filler. Gelatin is made of all the waste and junk that slaughterhouses can't package and sell outright to people and may not get away with grinding into pet food. They'll sell anything to any industry to make profit and so gelatin makes it into most things. Gelatin is in it to make those hearts taste creamier and to stabilize the ingredients.
It is allowed to be used because it is a perfectly safe food additive. Not everyone is a vegan or vegetarian. If they ban gelatin they woul have to ban all animal products.
Of course it is. It seems that a lot of people don't seem to give a damn what they eat and it's effects on themselves and other animals.
There is no vegetable source for gelatin.
Vegetarians usually avoid gelatin and use other emulsifiers instead, such as agar, carrageenan, pectin, or konnyaku.
Some of us know what's in it and are fine with eating it! If you don't want to it eat, no one is forcing you.
Why do you care what I want to eat and put in my body? If you think it's disgusting, don't eat it. Leave my food alone.
Gelatin provides structure. Some foods would be a runny or powdery without gelatin to hold it together.
If you're a vegan, concerned that gelatin is made from bone or skin, then consider foods containing pectin as an alternative. Pectin is fruit gelatin, typically from apples.
There used to be a version of conversation hearts made with seaweed instead of gelatin, used to stock them in the whole food store I worked in when i was at school, whatever happened to them ?
It is allowed because it is safe and legal. You're feeling sorry for the little critters it came from isn't a good enough reason to ban a food ingredient.
McDonald's fries their fries in tallow, which also comes from cows. now if its true that we are what we eat then you must not have any gelatin or meat in your body. think about it. humans are predators, predators eat meat. the way to tell the difference between carnivores and herbivores is to look at nature, look at the position of their eyes, all predators have eyes facing forward. all herbivores have eyes on their sides.-blurey
Its allowed to be used because your not the boss.;-)
If you are a flexitarian veg, you can eat all of the gelatin you want.
Because it's profitable to use every part of the animal they can.
It's kind of a moot point. Yes, of course *I* think it's disgusting, but I'm veg*n so I don't eat slaughter byproducts anyway. If you're a meat eater, you probably don't care since you're eating the flesh to begin with. If the people who are most offended by it are the very same group that avoids it (veg*ns) then why would manufacturers worry about not using it? The only way it's going to come off the market is if the majority of consumers decide they won't buy products with gelatin. Unfortunately, we veg*ns don't have the numbers behind us, although we're clearly influencing the market for the positive. Just look at all the meat and dairy free foods in the stores that weren't available 10 years ago. You can always send a letter or an e-mail to the manufacturer and let them know that there's at least one person who will not buy their product because of it. One letter won't make a difference to them, but a thousand might.
Gelatin falls under the category of GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) according to the U.S. government. Disgusting, yes, but safe. Carmine is also GRAS, but pretty icky as well (it's crushed cochineal beetles), but people still use stuff with it.
Some people would be grossed out to learn that certain foods have gelatin and just what gelatin is, but too many people just don't care. And most people are too lazy to read the label.
You might want to write the Necco company (who makes the hearts) and ask them to use a non-gelatin ingredient for the hearts. I miss them, too.
Because everyone isn't a tight azzed veggie like you queers.
