Why do some people even bother labeling themselves "flexitarians"?!

Question: There are some people who call themselves "flexitarians", because they think they are doing something radical by cutting down on their meat consumption rather than going vegetarian or vegan. While I think it's great that they have at least cut down on their consumption of meat, I also think it's pointless and silly for them to label themselves "flexitarians". After all, they are merely OMNIVORES who have chosen to cut down on their consumption of meat. An omnivore by any other name...

Because they want to fit in with the "cool" kids.

I could probably label myself flex, but I don't actually care enough to do so.

It's pretentious and moronic.

I may eat meat, but at least I don't try and hide it.

EDIT: *applauds Michael H*

Good one.

That's really funny - I have never heard that term before. Maybe by calling themselves that it makes them feel better about eating meat at all?

Good question.

If you want to label things just because you reduce one item in your diet then i have millions of labels:

I'm a brocolliarian, a carottarian and a Spoutarian

try this situation:

You go in a resturant:
Flexi: "I'm a flexitarian"
server: "oh, what can you eat ?"
Flexi: "anything"
server "????????? so, in what way exactly does the word flexitarian help us ?"

They want attention and have a constant need to feel special. There is not such thing as flexitarians.

I'm sorry, I need to respond to this

Common Sense....if you need "healthy meal on occasion" as in meat, why not just eat meat? Why do you need a label? Seriously? Does this define you? So what you really want is to be a vegetarian but can't? Is this why you need a label?

Everyone else seems to have a label, so why not them too. Besides it is just a way to get attention. It worked too, got your attention.

I can only judge by what I've seen here in the V & V because I've never come across the word anywhere else.

In here, it is simply a form of harassment. The flexi-troll(s), like C.S. here, use whatever means-du-jour to harass you vegers and encourage the eating of meat. When you are in this section and encouraging people to eat meat, it is obvious harassment.

It's also quite possible there is a psychiatric phenomenon involved. A deperate need for acceptance and the ugly consequence of rejection. The flexi-troll(s) have always been rejected in this forum and without a doubt, in life as well.

C.S.--obbsseessssiioonnn.

I'm guessing here but I would venture to say that it's because they need to have something interesting to say about themselves? Other than that it's beyond me.

You know it's a funny thing - a few minutes ago Common Sense was saying no flexitarian calls themselves a vegetarian. Now here he is doing it.

If people who eat only a little meat - though how up to 150 times a year can be considered little I'm not sure- want a special little title for themselves, fine by me.

It's a recently coined word with a specific meaning, and it only becomes a nonsense when used as an adjective in front of vegetarian or vegan, as these two relatively recently coined words have specific meanings too.

A very healthy diet no doubt, but the people who use this board and call themselves flexitarians are not good advertisements for it - they're known for their anger, spite and hatefulness.

Maybe they just don't want to be associated with vegetarians or vegans. I don't call myself either, even though I am vegetarian and I eat almost entirely vegan - no eggs or dairy in my house - because I don't want to label myself. Labels are a one-way track to intolerance.

I'm a vegetarian (an actual one, who does not eat any animal flesh), but I don't mind that some people like to call themselves flexitarians.

I think it's great that they want to cut down their meat consumption. I don't know why they need a label to do so, but it's not harming me. At least they aren't pescetarians trying to say that they're actually vegetarians. ;)

They still love the taste of meat.

I think transvestitiarian is more appropriate.

I totally agree with your confusion and annoyance with the "flexiarian" label... but I have no answer to the question because I wonder the exact same thing!

I'm doing something radical by eating meat and cutting back on veggies, does that count? I do consider myself a radical.

Amen.

Personally, I feel they're almost as warped as vegetarians who eat fish. Most likely also the same people who call vegans 'communists'...

They want the cute little label. Or they're too lazy to say that they don't eat THAT much meat/are trying to eat less. Or that the only flesh they eat is fish.

However, as long as they don't label themselves vegetarian and eat flesh foods, I'll roll my eyes and give them a pass. There are a lot bigger things for us to get upset about.

I've never heard that term before today, but I have to say I agree with you. They're just carnivores who don't eat a lot of meat! It's a pretty silly term if you ask me.

because they're dumb.

sorry that's all it is... they think vegetarianism is a "fad" and they want to be a part of it, or make they're own. the're just meat eaters who don't eat a lot of meat....

when i ate meat i ate the typical meats but i wasn't eating ostrich, hedgehog, horse, etc. was i a flexitarian?!

flexitarians vegans vegetarians are people like myself who like to eat a vegetarian diet but realize the need for a well rounded healthy meal on occasion. We also do not fall for the lunacy that if we crush a beetle on the sidewalk we have committed some cardinal sin, as others in this forum would lead you to believe. More and more people are leaning towards this flexitarian diet/lifestyle since we view all vegans of leading a strict vegan diet but a flexitarian lifestyle. In fact, these modern vegans were the first to introduce this flexitarian lifestyle to the people by still living in a modern world and using modern medications. However, the more intelligent of us have decided to apply it to our diets as well.

vegetarians are merely omnivores who have chosen to cut down on their consumption of meat. So why do they need a name? they are omnivores, shouldnt they just go by omnivore?

an expansion on me's question earlier as to why i didnt think 2-3 times a week is really a flexitarian- because they really have no need to explain themselves to anyone, they just like some vegetarian dishes, and most likely they wouldnt be refusing meat. But if you are refusing meat you might need to explain why, even if you are not a full vegetarian. that is where words like flexitarian can be helpful.

So what, leave the poor guys and gals alone, your not better then they are, even though your sitting on your veggie throne right now.
