See http://www.tryveg.com/cfi/toc/?v=08sourc... for some vegetarian foods that are high in protein and iron. You shouldn't need to take any supplements if you eat a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains. VegLife is a good supplement if you want to take one.

Books - "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being Vegetarian" is a helpful one.

Good luck!!

If you become vegetarian, there are no extra vitamins you need to take. Everything you get now you will be able to get from food when you are veg. If you go vegan, add a B12 supplement, but that isn't totally necessary if you drink soy milk, eat fortified grains, or use nutritional yeast.

You will get all the protein you need. You only need about 50 grams of protein a day. If you are feeling tired, withdrawn, etc. eat some beans or add an iron supplement. But usually this doesn't happen unless someone eats very unhealthily and unbalanced.

OK, great idea, but check with your doctor or nutritionist first. Make list of questions and write down his answers. There are lots of legume's and cheese that are natural supplements for proteins and go to it slowly and see if this is what you really want. Read the magazine Vegetarian Cooking and pick it up in the store and this also will give you great ideas. Lots of Luck!

Hi, Elizabeth, it is perfectly possible to get all the nutrients your body needs from a vegetarian diet, just make sure that your meals are balanced. You should eat a lot of green leafy vegetables for iron, tofu and beans for protein, and lot of fruit, always. You can visit the website of the Vegetarian Resource Group; they have lots of tips for new vegetarians, and I think they give out a free booklet for beginners.

Congratulations on your wise, compassionate, healthy, and environment-friendly choice! Go Veg!

Kyle W.. said most of it all but neglected to mention fruit is most important.. it has some enzymes that are similar to meat enzymes.. you need those enzymes.. tomatos, pumpkin, can provide that. As for B12 Kelp that's seaweed!
Salsify also contains B12. You also need potassium that is in bananas.. for most part Kyle W. is correct! You might be interested in my veggie recipes on ca.360.yahoo.com/ddherbals

i am a vegetarian, all i take is a daily vitamin the doctor says I'm alright. just eat things like peanut butter to get protein.

Not so much, but you should read a solid book on this. Also, the American Dietetic Association has a separate food pyramid for vegetarians. Beware of 2 things: some people use drastic forms of vegetarianism as a cover story for eating disorders and many people have very crazy beliefs about food. Vegetarian diets can be extremely healthy or extremely unhealthy. Be careful of your sources of information.

Read. Do your homework. Research. Know what you're doing. Why would you ask about supplements if you don't even know what, if anything, you'd be lacking?

Search engines are wonderful tools. Use them.

There is no supplement you need to take. To help you get your full protein you might want to add some quinoa to your diet. Quinoa is a full protein grain, the only other full protein besides red meat. You can buy it at http://www.purcellmountainfarms.com/Orga...

Kudos to you for wanting to be a vegetarian and getting the facts first!
