Nutritional Yeast?!
Answers: I bought some nutritional yeast and was making a sauce but it smells really strange. Does anyone know how to cook with it? Is the smell normal?
Yes, the smell is normal. It's got a stinky cheesy sort of smell. It's kind of an acquired taste, but I love the stuff. I sprinkle it on popcorn and mix it with lemon juice to make a tangy sauce for scrambled tofu.
Nutritional yeast is hit or miss. I've found the stuff in cans is gross. The bulk stuff at Whole Foods is the only kind i've found that I actually really like. It's still an acquired taste, I'd say, although I have no desire to acquire the taste to enjoy the ones that smell and taste like feet.
Nutritional yeast can have an unusual smell. I use the Red Star version or the flakes in the bulk bin. I usually mix it in seitan simmer liquid or in a gravy. It's also an acquired smell/taste. But it doesn't go bad, if that's what you're worried about.
