The gum base can be made from animal ingredients, which wouldn't be vegan. Here's a great link that explains everything, from what precisely makes gum non-vegan to whether there ARE vegan gums available:

~ - I agree with you completely, it looks like the trolls really got to you :( ... I just gave this girl a straightforward, simple answer like she asked, I'm not saying that it's even normal to become so consumed and to scrutinize food ingredients to that level.

wow i ddint know vegans cudnt have gum? and my grandma is vegan too

there is something made from snakes and something from a cow's belly in gum so vegans can not have it

It's on this list, just scroll down

Can't use tires either

Because we're too nutritionally deprived and weak to move our jaws like that?

Vegans *can* chew gum. We can do whatever we want. We choose not to eat, wear, or use animal products. Therefore, we find vegan and animal-friendly versions of things. That includes gum.

As far as gum base, I find freaking out over that silly. That defeats the point of veganism. Especially considering it's essentially the same ingredients that are on tape that makes it gummy/sticky. It makes no sense to me to avoid one thing that MAY include an animal ingredient, but be perfectly okay with it in others.

It's also similar to freaking out over mono/diglycerides. What is the point? They MAY be animal derived. Okay... a lot of things MAY be something. It's ridiculous to think that's what veganism means, to avoid things JUST to avoid them. The point is to reduce suffering. Of course everyone is going to think veganism isn't attainable, or even worth trying when people get to the nitty gritty like that.

The same as bone char sugar. If some people want to avoid it, that's fine. For me, i think it strays too far from the point and you never hear anyone freaking out about how their WATER is probably also filtered with bone char or another similar method, because it probably is.

Not to mention I find it awfully strange to say "most sugar isn't vegan because of bone char" then to go to Peta's Accidentally Vegan list and say all those conventional things are vegan. I highly, highly doubt all the vegan candies and packaged sweets on there are only made with nonbone char refined sugar.

Maggie: I know you were just answering her question. I wasn't directing my diatribe at you. I suppose I just happened to read this question at a time where I felt like expressing my feelings & this poor Asker got to hear it in her thread. :-D

not just vegans.. true vegitarians too gum is made with gelatin which is basically crushed up bones from different animals. it is also in many other things for ex: skittles, jello, and gummy bears. sorry to gross u out if i did

Most chewing gums innocuously list 'gum base' as one of their ingredients, masking the fact that petroleum, lanolin, glycerin, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, petroleum wax, stearic acid, and latex (a possible allergen) may be among the components because of standards of identity for items such as gum base and flavoring, manufacturers are not required to list everything in their product. Also, gum has certain fats of animals.

So as you can see dear, a confirmed vegan said "I'm not saying that it's even normal to become so consumed and to scrutinize food ingredients to that level".--

So it really doesn't matter to "some" vegans. What matters is what kind of vegan are you talking about? The kind of "vegan of convenience" that make their own rules like the one who said that quote above?

Or the "true" vegans like you find in other parts of the world, but obviously not here. Those are the ones that really can answer that question for you.

Basically, most of the gums are made out of animal products which is totally has been refused by vegans.

I'm a vegan and I chew gum on occasion.

I guess that makes me a bad person.... I do my best, and I don't freak out about the little things like "may contain traces of..." I also drive a car. And I eat sugar. Oh, and my coat has wool in it. And since I can't take medication while pregnant, I ate a couple spoonfuls of honey to sooth my throat. I'm evil and hate animals.

80) I know that didn't answer your question. My point is that I think it's more important to be dilligent about the big stuff, and stop stressing about the fine print. It's hard enough for the majority of people to understand why I would want to be a vegan. If I obsessed about every tiny little possibility that an animal was harmed in the process of every single thing, people would think I'm crazy.

Good question. I don't think there are any animal products in gum...
