Why do so many non-vegetarians troll the vegan/vegetarian area of this site? Why are meateaters scared of us?!

Question: When I come to the Vegetarian/Vegan section of Yahoo answers I'm looking to find questions from and for veg*ns. Sometimes I do find that.
Other times I find stupid questions from meat-eating trolls who think they're being cute or they'll answer veg*n questions with "Eat meat." or "A nice steak sounds yummy!"

Why do they feel so threatened??? I am a teacher and my students know that I am a vegetarian as well as why I chose to be a vegetarian. Only a (very) small minority make a big deal about it and act like @$$es (much like the trolls on here.) Why do meat eaters act like that?

The OBVIOUS "eat steak" and "eating carrots is murder" and "do vegitarians (sic) eat animal crackers" and "vegaterians (sic) are all pale and enemic (sic) because they don't get any proteen (sic)" posting trolls are just a minor annoyance, in the big scheme of things - they're predictable - you KNOW that they're going to post Q & A in the V & V section. It's more of a surprise if they DON'T post in here!

The only really annoying ones are the trolls that pretend to be veg*an and post Ashleyesque Q & A in order to fool the gullible non-regulars into thinking that all veg*ans are as loony as she is.

Ok, so what motivates the rabid anti-veg*an hate-posters? Just your basic "common or garden variety" xenophobia - that's all. It's the same thing that motivates homophobes, judaeophobes, misogynists, islamophobes, sinophobes, negrophobes, etc. If they perceive a certain group as a threat (and usually it's a minority group - as xenophobia most often affects people who have extremely little social contact with their target group - otherwise they would get to know them and realise that they are just the same as everyone else in the community except for one totally insignificant difference - skin colour, religion, sexual preference, dietary choice, whatever) - whether that unfounded threat be "they're going to steal all our jobs" or "they're going to stop me from stockpiling guns and ammunition" or "they're trying to convert us all to their weirdo religion" or "they're going to steal our women" or "they want to rape my @$$" or "they're trying to stop me from smoking in public" or "they're going to ban the sale of beef" or whatever - then they are going to knee-jerk against that imagined "threat".

In the case of the V & V forum, they have usually had little or no contact with veg*ans in real life, and the contact in here has been mostly from reading an attention-grabbing Ashleyesque question from the main board and thinking that it's a real veg*an writing anti-carnivore twaddle. They don't have the time or foresight to read the other answers, which say that "Ashley" or whatever other alias she is using at the time is not a veg*an, and is in fact a troll pretending to be a veg*an in order to give veg*ans a bad reputation. Just straight in and answer the question with a hate message for all veg*ans.

I suspect there's very little we can do about these veganophobes, other than point out the errors in their assumptions and statements - which is next to pointless, because they most likely will not read answers other than their own. If they get really abusive in their answers, then they can be reported (as should all really abusive Q & A, whoever they're from), but that's about all there is we can do. C'est la vie!

It really doesn't bother me anymore.. just kinda got used to it around here... Trolls are EVERYWHERE in here.. you can't stop them.. most of their questions are a good time if you want a good laugh at the answers.. other then that.. live and let live really..

I eat meat and that's my decision but if people don't I would respect that I hate seeing that kinda comment as it's unhelpful and disrupts the flow of education of these boards.

as a meateater I don't care what you eat or why other meateaters would

must feel threatened by us??

As you know, most meat eaters are quite accepting, or just have no particular opinion about us at all. The large population of trolls here is deceiving. There are fewer than there appear to be because of a handful dedicated ones who make multiple IDs. They're just a ridiculous example of how the internet brings out the worst in some people.

It's very strange, isn't it? It often happens to me that I'll mention, in the meekest and mildest non-confrontational manner possible, that I don't eat meat and someone will start asking me why I think I'm so high and mighty, don't I realize I'm killing the plant too, I should go to hell and so on. I have no idea why some meat eaters are so angry with non-meat eaters.

I personally feel that this is a public forum and everyone is welcome here. I feel fine with respectful, polite people that ask questions - it's crucial to be able to handle conversation and debate.

I think the problem is that there's a few meat-eaters that HATE vegetarians and vegans (they come here and have fake troll accounts where they actually IMPERSONATE other users and go around to sections like the Hunting section or other Food and Drink sections and post stuff like "meat is murder" or other inflammatory stuff).

Non-veg people who wouldn't normally bother with the V&V section see these trolls and assume that this is how ALL veg*ns are like and come here and lash out on us. I swear to you, just today I saw 5 - 6 troll ID's in different sections asking inflammatory things, pretending to be vegan.

There's even a troll that goes by the name "Ashley" that creates bizarre scenarios in which she goes out of her way to say meat-eaters are immoral and then rants about how all meat-eaters should be assimilated and converted. It's pure hatred and unfortunately many people fall for it.

It's depressing sometimes because this is where prejudice and hate starts - misunderstandings and misinformation.

Because they knew someone who had a friend whose neighbor's best friend's cousin saw a movie that had a vegetarian in it. And she thought she was better than everyone else. And her hair started falling out. And she was pale. And anemic. And didn't shower. And wore birkenstocks (nonleather of course). Duh.

*sigh* Because they're morons who are insecure with themselves which in turn makes them feel threatened by us. Who knows why.

Tiss: that's one of the trolls that was previously mentioned. They post pretending to be vegetarian and act like morons. They're YOUR people, not ours.

I check out this section occasionally, out of curiosity. I generally don't answer questions, since I'm not a vegetarian, but sometimes a question will be compelling enough to get me to answer. For example, there was a woman who was so disgusted when her husband ate meat, that she wouldn't let him sleep in the same room with her. I had to chime in on that one, because it seems vegetarians want acceptance of their choices, but often refuse to extend the same acceptance to others who choose to eat meat. To answer your question, though - I'm not scared of you, or threatened by you. That's just silly.

Okay, as a vegan, I am on this broad to answer/ ask serious, interesting question. However the trolls seem to be taking too much pleasure in asking dumb questions.

My combat action is to stop feeding the trolls, and not reacting. and being cool myself!

Some people have nothing better to do than be jerks.

Keep the faith brother.

what makes you think that anybody is scared
do your thing.........we will do ours

all that meat makes them cuckoo & angry

people generally think vegetarians are somehow aggressive and try to impose their choices on everyone...but it actually works the other way round (that's my experience). if you mention you don't eat meat the meat eaters start arguing with you even if you don't say anything ...i reckon it's because they know (maybe subconsciously) that eating meat isn't right because the animals suffer terribly
(i'm not a proper vegetarian btw.)

Good question.

I think they just see us as "different" from them and flame us for being "different". I remember posting a question in this section of Yahoo! Answers. Oh, you would not believe the idiotic answers i received. I think you can imagine what answers i got.

They also attack us because they think not eating meat is "feminine" and dangerous. I remember class mates and my brother saying that not eating meat is really "girly" and makes you anorexic. Bah.

So in other words to answer your question, they just feel we're different from them and try to revert back from our "different-ness"

PS- or they just want to piss us off.

There jealos of our superior health, and weight. they are also scared of difference
(only some not all)

You are a threatening my food supply. Your illogical and ignorant views recruit other people.

*defends steak*

i posted a question about it also. I have no idea why some people carry on about vegan and vegetarianism - i think if i was to go to the cooking section and bag meat eaters i would get a lot of responses back!

Most of the time it's just having fun. I laugh with them. Whatever.

My family eats meat, but I visit this section because one of my kids is allergic to eggs and milk, so I do a lot of vegan cooking for him when baking or on Fridays when we are skipping meat.

Do meat eaters act like that? You poor thing..

Sounds like you are a vegetarian snob to me. I feel the same way about this as I feel about gay people telling everyone about their sex life I do not care or want to hear it. Why don't you loosen up a little and have some fun in life. (You do not know if I am a vegetarian or not) This is just how I see you!

I, for one, could not care less WHAT you choose to eat... Why do your students need to know about your eating habits ???Seems to me that is a personal kind of thing, likened to sexual preferences... Unless you are trying to get converts, you are the only person who should know... By the way, I would like to see many more people convert to vegetarian, maybe the price of steak would come down a bit for the rest of us who enjoy it...

As a flexitarian vegetarian, I don't think ominivores (for a teacher you should get your terms straight ... "meateaters" usually is understood to mean carnivores" are "scared". That's just a silly statement or to say they "hate" us, or there is some sort of conspiracy going around. That is just "sick" thinking.

Personally, I feel they just like to push buttons. Why? Because they can and the more rigid and intolerant people on here foster that perception. And of course the rigidity comes out in so many different ways.

And we have the most bizarre ideas on here ... How about "you CAN"T be a vegetarian" or in my circumstances "You CAN"T be a flexitarian vegetarian, there is no such thing." Hell,, I can be anything I want on one hand, on the other, "real time" articles, literature, etc., repeatedly speaks of the growing REALITY of flexitarian vegetarians.

So as long as "strict" vegetarians deny reality, all of us will be perceived as nuts and the button pushers will continue doing so.
