I have a question concerning Jones Soda...?!

Question: I am a strict vegan, and only ingest certain types of sugar, such as evaporated cane juice. A lot of sugar is processed with animal bone char, which makes it so I cannot eat/drink it. I miss soda terribly, and have been emailing the Jones Soda company several times, inquiring as to whether or not they use animal bone char is the production of the pure cane sugar used in their sodas. They never reply to me. Would anyone else happen to know the answer to my question? Thanks!

Thank you for actually highlighting this. I'm not a vegan, more a veggie, but did not know about the bone char!!! I've done some research on the web and it seems that Jones Soda Co are one of many that won't answer that question!! Apparently over 50% of cane suger is processed using bone char. Their lack of answer to you would probably mean they do too!!!! There are a lot of websites dedicated to this. Try this one for starters...they also have forums which are quite good for getting the heads up on things!!!http://www.chow.com/stories/10214

Many Jones Soda varieties ARE vegan, just read the ingredients.

For instance, this version is vegan:
http://www.jonessodastore.com/shop/produ...

Their sugar free sodas are largely vegan too.

Their canned sodas are sweetened with corn syrup, so there is no bone char issue either.

Their site doesn't mention at about how the sugar that they use is processed.

A quote from their site:

"You may have seen that our 12-ounce cans of soda are now made with pure cane sugar, and by mid-2007 all of your favorite Jones products will be available with real sugar. "

My suggestion - if such is a concern for you - when in doubt, do without.

Like anything else, if you're that worried then go without.

Assassin: If bonechar sugar bothers you then don't consume it, but don't fall victim to the belief that you aren't vegan if you don't check the background of your sugar. As I stated in another thread yesterday, that defeats the purpose of veganism. The purpose isn't to avoid animal products just because they're animal products. It's to avoid suffering and avoid supporting profiting from suffering. Not to mention even WATER can be purified with bone char, and nobody freaks out about that. Thirdly, take a look at all the things that are "known" to be vegan, i.e. http://www.peta.org/accidentallyvegan. How can someone say "bonechar sugar isn't vegan" and then say all sorts of other foods are, when I very highly doubt that the sugar contained in those foods are checked to be nonbonechar refined. Similar with mono & diglycerides. Ohhh they might not be vegan because they *could* be animal derived... Do you think that all the foods that are "known" to be vegan have had their mono & diglycerides sources checked? doubtful. The whole thing is silly.

Veganism isn't about being nitpicky. That's why so many people think it's unattainable. Look at all the trolls that post here about how someone isn't vegan if they once knew someone who had a neighbor who once saw a movie that had a slaughtered cow in it. After a point it gets ridiculous, UNLESS you do have personal objection to it (and there's nothing wrong with someone if they do), don't do it just because you're told by someone else to. Especially when it makes no sense.

If they can not be bother to answer I'd write them off. Really. I have Celiac Disease it's what is advised to our group to maintain our health. When in doubt DO NOT EAT or DRINK IT. I think the same should apply here.
Have you checked any of the Veggie/Vegan Listing for this company?
Curious, It took me awhile but Veggie Times List Blue Sky & Jones as Vegan(no bone char). That is the only reference I found. Nothing on their(Jones) website except to say Natural Cane Sugar.
