Why do we eat meat?!
Answers: "Survival of the fittest", as Darwin once said. Or "will to power" by Nietszche. Our primitive ancestors had to hunt deers, gazelles, fishes, some birds and even reptiles to eat them. Its our instinct. Practically all civilizations have these instincts. [Only Hindu civilization have created "doubts"] And humans are still "food" for other animals. Doubt? Jump into a river with crocodiles. Of course we should be "compassionate" with a dog, cat, deer, birds or a squirrel. But not to a pig or boar. Feedback, please.
umm. why post this in the "vegetarian & vegan" section?
just put it in the "food & drink" section. dumba**
I don't know what you're getting at but I am getting hungry. Think we'll go for ribs today. Dry rub texas style with a variety of sauces on the side. YUM!
I eat meat because it tastes good.
We don't.
You posted in "Vegetarian and Vegan" my friend.
Try the general "Food & Drink" section next time.
I would agree that all ethical statements have some arbitrary component, but that does not mean we should abandon all ethics. The key is to be as reasonable as possible. The most ethical behavior probably would be to eat absolutely nothing so as to cause no impact on your environment. This is clearly impractical. The least ethical behavior would be to kill and eat anything you want, including humans. Almost all people would consider this wrong.
You probably asking this question because you think that its an argument against people who are not eating meat. Lol. But, I will answer you. This is right, we should eat plants raw. And in fact many people around the world are doing that (Crudivorism). Human were not meant to eat plants, but fruits in fact. Human were not meant to eat seed for example. That's why we have to **** them (like wheat, rice, lentils) in order to be able to eat that kind of food. So the evidence is: humans were meant to eat fruits and we usually eat them raw.
I don’t mean that we should stop cook plants and cereals (seeds). It is a cultural heritage, this is a way to have more variety and if we don’t abuse that kind of food, it is not really un-healthy. Meat is different, because when you choose to eat meat, you have to ask yourself "is my wish to have the taste of meat in my mouth greater than the wish of this animal to continue to live, to be happy and to grow-up by himself?” You can’t ask the same question for a plant, as a plant can’t have "wishes". And if someone think seriously a plant have wishes, then probably the wishes of any fruits-tree is to find someone to bring the fruits, to eat them and to let the seed fall-down somewhere it can grow-up. So, to everybody who is telling that plant can have "wishes", being fruitarian and then come here to help the one who are "only" vegetarian or vegan, to follow you.
getting food from small animals isn't very efficient, and it's more efficient getting the meat from bigger animals.
smaller animals also usually make for better pets, which may be y we r more compassionate to them
we eat meat because it is easier to gather enough food from both meat and vegetables.
For a balanced diet.
Lets look at a Gorilla or chimp or orang utan or gibbon. These apes being closer to man are known to consume a variety of insects and a far greater variety of plant material that nobody really knows. All kinds of eggs too. Chimps have been recorded to cannibalise on other chimps . Some zoos feed boiled chicken to their monkeys .
Hindu civilisation never created doubt but taught people to revere the cow because people were extremely dependent on this animal.
We are compassionate with lots of animals but kill and consume every type of meat.. Do you not feel compassionate towards a pig or boar ? Why not. ? They're really great animals like cattle, sheep, goat, camel, buffalo, horse, dog, squirrel, anteater, porcupine, deer of all types, tiger ...all are eaten ...every day of every year.
You will not eat the flesh of animal if you were brought up a vegetarian. Going back to primitive man , perhaps early on man first learnt to eat man before then beginning to kill other animals for food.
Just my thoughts, this answer is for a real good anthropologist !
Because it provides a complete protein source. It is good for growing children and can be part of a balanced, healthy diet although red meat should be eaten no more than twice a week. It also tastes good too.
Yes our ancestors had to hunt to eat. But just as we (in the west anyway) no longer NEED to live in caves, or to kill animals in order to wear their skins as clothing, so we no longer NEED to eat meat. It's a choice.
Carnivorous animals like crocodiles DO need to eat meat; omnivores like us have choices; some of us choose not to eat meat.
In some countries it is normal to eat dogs or cats, yet you say we should be compassionate towards them as opposed to other animals. It is perfectly acceptable in all countries where deer live to kill and eat them as food - another animal you make a special case for. And as for birds... Can you see your lack of logic there? What would you say to people who eat the animals you think we should have compassion for?
I don't think you've really thought this through
I don't like Darwin, but I see what your saying. The Hindu culture has made this a bad thing. Now go have a nice steak.
i don't eat meat because it is against my moral beleifs. i beleive that since we can live without killing other animals, i think we should. but everybody has their opinions. i think we should be compassionate with every animal, not just the ones we keep as pets.
