Well I went vegan cold turkey (no pun intended!) about three times before I found out what worked out for me, which was to slowly taper down what meat I ate.

First I gave up pork, which didn't really count, as I never really ate it,
then was beef
then was poultry (chicken/turkey) (which was VERY hard btw)
last was seafood (fish, crab legs, etc.)

I started doing dairy replacement (soy milk/rice fake cheese slices) right away, and substituting the fake meat (big recommendation: Tofurkey) on sandwiches wasn't that difficult.

But I recommend giving yourself at LEAST a week or two (or a solid month) between ramping down what you eat, to make your body become "used" to what it doesn't eat and to make the change easier for you.

Also if you could prepare food by yourself, especially if it's something that can be easily substituted (e.g. using fake cheese and fake beef...which at this point I can't even look at now, much less real beef) when your family is having tacos can help, so you won't feel like you're out there by yourself.

Hope this helps!

keep more meat in the house and just say NO to meat!

This is one of those things that you just have to have some willpower and stick to once you have made the decision. There is not going to be any easy way to break a habit you have had your whole life, if you want to do it, just do it. Make sure you know what you are doing before you try though. As I have told many many people before, being a vegetarian is so much more than just simply not eating meat. Study up, this book is one I recommend to people thinking about making the switch to a vegetarian diet:

Good luck, and stick to your commitments! :)

1)ask your self why you want to do this, research your supporting beliefs and write down facts of why you want to be a vegetarian

2) Write down all the reasons you do not want to eat meat. keep the paper with you and every time you want to eat meat just read it.

3) learn to make all your favorite dishes meatless. - that way you are not missing out on your food, just the meat.

4) Start to learn to make one different/new veg*n dish every week, so by the end of a few months you will feel confident cooking without meat.

I don't know if you are old enough to read skinny B1tCh, If you are over 18 and you don't mind hard language, try reading it. It is very well researched and it shows you basically what is good to eat and what is not. but because it is a book for veg*n it is very helpful.

well this will help
go to peta.com and jus look at the meet your meat videos
and check out how they treat the animals
it really helped me
i have no desire to eat meat now.

I became a vegetarian on January 1, 2007 and am still going strong in a meat eating house. Take it slowly though. Start by not eating any meat other than fish. I am short and skinny and I have to eat fish because I need some source of protein and live in a Japanese household where I can't avoid fish. Think about a dying animal. I'm sorry but, it works for me!

Cupcake :-)

i just made my own meals are became perfectly fine with being around my family while they eat meat.

congradulations on trying to make the change, lol, try and get support, even if they are eating meat..support can carry you though anything

It was one of the easiest things I've ever done, so I'm not sure I can help you there. But I suggest transitioning yourself.

Like first remove red-meat from your diet, then poultry, then fish, and then you're good. :)

im a vegetarian, and my family is too. we eat things like quorn and linda mccartney (if you know them). it depends where your from. but there a good substitute. and apparently taste like meat. but i dont know if thats completely true :)
