So called 'vegetarians' make me so angry..?!

Question: We were going over class rules in foods class the other day when the teacher asked if anyone was allergic, couldnt eat foods because of religion, etc. One girl said she was vegetarian and she claims to be vegetarian even though she eats fish and turkey. Now, my question is HOW can people claim to be vegetarian and eat select meats? Last time I checked fish are living breathing creatures. I recently found out there were several types of vegetarians ranging from ones that eat fish to turkey and chicken only. To me vegetarian has ONE meaning and that is not eating any type of animal meat.

To people who eat meat and still consider themselves vegetarian .. what exactly are you thinking when you're eat meat? are you still certain that you are vegetarian?

Great question.

I think some people like the tag 'vegetarian' because it makes them feel they can be set apart from others in some high moral way, or whatever.

Personally, I find it a bit sad when a meat or fish eater says they're veggie. An animal is an animal, no matter whether it's wet or dry.

I don't eat any animal products at all, but I'm not yet a full-fledged vegan because I still sit on a leather couch (bought before I gave up meat and stuff) and have a few bags I'm reluctant to part with yet. I feel like I'm getting there, but not yet worthy of the tag, if you know what I mean.

im trying to be a vegetarian but its hard...every day at school there is meat and its real tempting.so i cant call myself one.

i completely agree with you. when i was at school a large portion of my friends claimed to be vegetarian and still ate fish and chicken. when i asked how they called themselves a vegetarian they shrugged it used to drive me mad as i was a full vegetarian in fact i was vegan not eating any animal product just because i didn't like it not because of the killing animal issue.
people should just say i don't eat red meat instead of putting themselves in the vegetarian class

I agree with you 100%. I am indian, and my other indian friends say they are vegetarian, just because they do not eat cow! Its so stupid.

However, now looking at a business way. I am glad more people can say they are vegetarian, becuase then it will not be such weird concept. and more food business, would cater to a proper vegetarian meal. - so in the end there could be more real vegetarians.

I try not to get too upset about it, but yeah you are right.

Poor girl, feeling precious being branded as "vegetarian". It is part of your duty to enlighten her for what vegetarianism is all about. No one is perfect, indeed vegans like me are still making alot of moves.

In modern concept of “vegetarian” or “vegan” often MISUNDERSTOOD. "Vegetarianism" originated from "Satvic" philosophy, and regarded as modern "strict" vegetarianism. VEGETARIANISM is just VEGETARIANISM. It has it's unique philosophy. No any kind of animal meat and egg in the real context.

You are absolutely right. I'm a vegan, and I've known people who were like, "Oh wow, that's so cool [that I'm a vegan]! Yeah, I'm a vegetarian, except I still eat fish...". All the while I'm thinking to myself, "Saying that did not make me think any higher of you." I guess my point is that unless you eat NO meat whatsoever, you're not a vegetarian. If someone happened to only like fish or chicken and no other meats, they wouldn't be able to call themselves vegetarian, would they? Nope. I don't know. The whole thing pisses (sorry) me off sometimes. Fish have feelings too! Just watch 'Finding Nemo'. :3

If you eat meat then you are not vegatarian.

Fish is more flexable as many people dont class that as meat.
I am a vegatarian but I dont eat fish mainly because i dont like it. You can class yourself as a vegatarian if you eat fish in my opionion though.

Yeah, well, it's just wording. It's easier to say, "I'm basically 100% vegetarian except I eat turkey and fish..." than going down a whole list of things... right?

Otherwise, all these different types of vegetarians... just nonsense. All these wackos out there who for whatever reason want to be associated with vegetarianism without actually being a vegetarian... very weird. I don't care, but it's weird. I don't know, why would you do that? It would be like saying, "I'm a car mechanic, but only know how to fix two different parts on a car."

It's the whole reason someone came up with that annoying word "vegan" -- just because so many people were out there saying, "I'm vegetarian, but eat _____*insert name of animal product(s) here*_____. Fish, milk, eggs, lizard, turkey, bird, whatever... not vegetarian.

In most other countries, either you are a vegetarian, or you are not. There are no laws or rules or anything, it's just common sense. I have a feeling that the whole hippie movement started all this vegetarian confusion thing. All these people wanting to belong to some kind of hippie movement and be able to say they are "one with the earth" or whatever and be able to say "I'm vegetarian" and be accepted etc.

You are 100% correct. Most real vegetarians and vegans get riled up over this issue as well. I'm so glad you understand. A lot of omnivores don't understand.

Hi, I gave up meat a few weeks ago, but I've been wanting too for years, and finally talked to my parents about it, and surprisingly, they are proud! But, I still eat fish, just because since I'm just trying to make the transition from eating loads of meat (wich was wrong! ) to eating very little, I am trying to do it gradually. I don't know how long this girl has been "vegetarian" but she needs to get more info. I understand about ppl just now doing it, like me, changing so much, but still eating turkey or chicken, is no vegetarian. Neither is eating fish. I just say, " I am a Pescetarian" or tell them I am a recovering jerk..... lol It is very hard, so If ur not use to the lifestyle, I think starting off pescetarian, is a good start.

I wouldn't allow it to upset myself.

I see it more as a lack of education and ability to use the common dictionary myself.

Just my view of course.

Labels often disable! When someone asks me if I am vegan I tell them no, I am Justin. There is nothing wrong with being passionate about your own beliefs, however, some people just feel the need to promote themselves as something other than themselves. Pick your battles.

Not everyone is a vegetarian for moral purposes. Some choose vegetarianism for health reasons or religious reasons. So if one chooses to not eat a certain type of meat, like red meat, then they can still qualify as a vegetarian.

i only eat fish and no meat and i consider myself vegetarian because of the different types of vegetarians there are. i consider myself a pescatarian vegetarian is you want to be specific but either way you think of it i, the girl in your class and anyone else who fits under the many definitions IS a vegetarian no matter what you say. oh and vegetarian may have one meaning to you but to most other people( and the dictionary) it has many meanings.
