Why are veggie meals so spicy?!

Question: when I go out for a meal in a pub or restuarant and order the veggie option its always far to spicy and hot. I had falafel with side salad, coucous and dip.

By the way, whats falafel made from???

Is it because non-veggies think that without meat, food must be tasteles so they over compensate with too many herbs and spices..

It's because the people cooking the food are not very skilled and their taste buds are not in working order. They eat crap food as part of their diet, and when they take a taste of that veggie dish they just make... tastes like nothing to them, so they throw in some spices... They probably dump salt and pepper in there too -- all poor cooks rely on salt and pepper. I see supposedly professional cooks relying on salt and pepper -- pathetic.

It depends on the country and region -- it's a pretty popular dish all across the middle east and up into Greece down into India, and beyond. I believe falafel is typically wheat bulger, beans, and parsley and spices made into a shape and fried or deep fried. Although, I am guessing that the deep frying is a modern cooking method -- where I live, often you can choose from deep-fried or baked, as the baked option has become popular for health reasons.

At home, I just bake falafel in a casserole dish in the toaster oven. So much easier and healthier than deep frying -- no mess to clean up or oil in the air too.

falafel is ground Fava beans&chick peas...with spices

I think your right about them over compensating with the spices on veggie meals.....

Falafel and couscous originate from places where they make a lot of spicy food.

You've probably hit the nail on the head there bud, it's most likely that the food is somewhat rather 'blandish' & to 'compensate' for it try to add some flavours to it, not to everyones taste i'm afraid!.....

Your'e right - without the additional herbs & spices most veggie food merely tastes of low-grade cardboard.

Falafel is made of chick peas and spices, rolled into little balls and deep fried...

I also think you're right about vegeterian meals often being overly spicy - they are trying to compensate for the "lack of flavour" aspect that veggies have gotten a back reputation for.

If you're on in a restaurant and want to order a veggie meal, tell them that you'd like a milder version. It's worth a try..

Yes you're right. To give extra flavor many veggitarians add spices, or sauces.

because veggies dont have much flavour

2 reasons I can think of:
1) most of these foods especially from the middle east and india are spicy as reflected by the culture of the dish's origins
2) there seems to be an automatic association with vegetarian/vegtable foods as "healthy" and therefore chefs/cooks compensate for percieved lack of flavor (from reducing fat and salt content) with spices

It was simply the menu choices you made. Some veggie foods are spicy and some aren't.

Whether something is too spicy or over-seasoned is a matter of personal taste. Maybe you just have a lower tolerance for spiciness than some other people do...

Falafel is made primarily from chickpeas.

Falafel is MEANT to be spicy! It's a middle eastern dish, and so contains alot of different spices.
I can't say I've noticed things are spicy when I've been eating out.
