Is a vegetarian highly sensitive child okay ?!

Question: My daughter is very sensitive.
She is a light sleeper and wakes up easily during the night because she has vivid dreams.

She thinks about many issues and tries to solve problems like the environment, pollution, wildlife, poverty etc.

She is a vegetarian because she doesn't want to be cruel to animals.

She is sensitive to peoples feelings and can easily tell what a person is feeling by facial expression or body posture.

She does well in school (grade 6) and has many friends which is great.
I guess Im more concerned she is worrying too much.
Or not ?

All kids go through these kinds of worries... some just show it more than others.
Aside from the animal/ vegetarian thing, I worried about all of the same things as a child/ teen, for me it was somewhat a sense of insecurity, worrying about the things in life which I had no control over...
Personally, I somehow came to the realization one day that there are billions of uncontrollable things in life, I began believing in the 'everything happens for a reason' theory... and have taken comfort in that...
Maybe you should try to explain to your daughter that without negatives in the world, there can't be positives either...
Just as an example... we all know that drugs are bad, ideally the world would be a better place without them (I'm talking illegal drugs, used recreationally... not legitimate prescriptions!)...
Now... think about all of the rehab doctors, nurses, specialists, psychiatrists, police officers, detectives, councelors etc that would be out of jobs... good decent hard working people, without jobs to support their families....
I would just try to explain to your daughter that from all things negative, eventually there comes a positive, whether it's clear and obvious, or not.

Sorry for rambling...

Good Luck!

not every one - child is the same. Your daughter seems to care more then most. which is not a bad thing. infact as her mom, you should support her. she may be the next shaker and changer of society. Many great individuals changed soceity for better, and I think your child may just be finding her own way and seeing that this world does need better care!

you are very lucky your daughter sounds so sweet and kind. i dont think you have to worry too much about her being a vegitarian though.. she knows that she really is not missing out on anything, because she is helping out in the way that she really wants to.

Too bad the parents of kids who skin the neighborhood cats and bully their classmates don't care as much as you do.

She is fine. Be proud that you have such a compassionate daughter. And have a talk with the principal about how inappropriate it is for a teacher to tell a kid she's "missing out on life" because she has a little compassion for other living beings.

I am also highly sensitive, I didn't even know there was a name for it until recently. I know what your child is going through. Being a vegetarian is good for her, it helps her know that she is not causing the suffering that she can see/feel in these animals. She may be worring too much, I know I do. There is a book called The Highly Sensitive Person that can very well help your daughter and you understand the sensitivity and the other things she is going through. Maybe talk to a doctor about her worrying.

Is she that tv nerdy girl Lisa Simpson? They both sound the same. Maybe somebody is brainwashing that girl. And thanks for the demerits, I love them.
