Gelatin... Jello?!

Question: Is the gelatin used in jello and other pudding/jello mixes from animals or alternatives (seaweed, ect.) these days? How could I find out which brands use which type? Thanks...

Jello and all the major brands that you can get for 50 cents to a dollar per box at the grocery are all gelatin (meaning hooves and bones, etc.)

The ones that use alternatives are made with agar agar, carageenan, etc. You can find the mixes at natural health food stores.

Personally, when I crave jello I go to the store and buy the Kool-Aid gels or the Dole fruit gels (and there's another brand I've bought that's sugar free and gelatin free--I don't remember which brand though). They're cheap and easy (and vegetarian). I'm not thrilled about the waste in packaging, but other than that they're cool.

its alternatives, u can always do a google search on the name brand jello u purchase, u can also inquire by calling the products business :)

If it says gelatin, it is animal derived. Alternatives will be listed as Agar Agar, guar gum or carrageenan. or vegan gelatin.

it is the pig skina dn cowe skin and hooves my uncle had to do painting and 3 of his co workers threw up and they had to showers whn they got home it smells horrible

If it says "gelatin" it's animal based.

If it's agar agar, plant cellulose, or carrageenan it will SAY agar agar, plant cellulose, or carrageenan.

gelatin is infact 27% bones, 28% hides, 44% skin, & 1% other so if you look on the back of something & under ingredients it says gelatin your eating all of that.

anyways... Hunt's Snack Packs, both gels and pudding,
Dole makes something called Fruit in gel, Simple Organics Pudding, Alpro Dairy-Free Caramel Pudding , Horizon Organics has jello cups, & also if it says kosher jello or pudding it doesn't contain any animal products.
ID suggest just looking at the ingredients on the back of different jellos.

heres recipe to make your own gelatin free jello:
-20 cups Juice blend (frozen and reconstituted, not from concentrate or powder), like Pineapple Orange
-4 to 6 Tbsp. corn starch (Depending on how firm you want it)

*Heat the juice blend until it gets reasonably hot on stove. Add the cornstarch and stir until it is blended. When it thickens to something like jelly put it in a dish. Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours or until firm.

oh & btw marshmallows, peeps(the things you get at easter) & gummy bears also contain gelatin

Jello in Canada no longer contains gelatin. I would assume it's the same in the US... but I don't know for sure. Check the label, otherwise go to a health food store and buy some with agar agar. That's a vegan alternative to gelatin.
