Vegans: why not organic?!
Answers: Other than the fact that "organic" can be a vague word on the market (and therefore not guarantee good treatment of the animals and land), I'm not sure that I see why I should avoid dairy products that, say, come from a small family farm. It doesn't seem readily obvious that the act of taking unfertilized eggs from a chicken or milk from a cow brings about any type of suffering for the animals involved. So, is there any reason why I should avoid organic milk and eggs and be completely vegan?
its your decision and like you said the "organic" lable cant always be trusted to treat their animals well. but if you personally know the farmer that you are buying your free range milk and eggs from and you feel ok with it then thats fine.
personally i still wouldn't drink milk because its technically taking away from the calf's nutrient source. the milk is for the calf not us.
i guess if you could garentee the eggs weren't fertilized, the hens had a great environment and died of old age rather than end up on a dinner plate then maybe I could eat an egg. but I guess thats too many demands... so its just easier not to eat them.
its your call at the end of the day...
=)
all things grown in the earth are organic.
It depends on whether it's abusive or not. But not taking milk away from the cow can be abusive because it can make their utters swollen and they can get sick from that. A cow doesn't always have a calf around to feed. But as long as it's done humanely, it's good enough. And being organic basically means that no pesticides and crap are added.
It really depends why you are doing it.
Organic is natural without chemicals, and hopefully free range organic eggs are less cruel than caged hen eggs.
But the thing is humans are the only adult animals that drink milk (from other animals). The milk is meant for the young of the animals (calves or kids) not adult humans,as far as nature is concerned. We drink mothers milk when very young, then get weaned, did nature intend for us to drink the milk of other animals after this?
The same with eggs, they are naturally laid to produce chickens, like our eggs are to produce babies if they are fertile.
It's an image thing. Dairy cows aren't tortured to get their milk. A cow goes out to eat, makes a bunch of milk then goes to get milked. Farmers do care about their cows! If you don't think otherwise then you obviously have never been to a farm. These cows are what keep (some) of the farmers in business. The animal will rarely ever have to go through any suffering. I don't know where some of you guys get your information. Come out to a small Wisconsin farm sometime, and you will see.
Well, as far as i know about vegans, some of then, ( not strict ones) DO eat eggs and drink milk, and eat fish, they just don't take meat or other by produce of meat. And for organic, it means there are no( virtually zero.) harmful chemicals used, there are reasons why you SOULD not be a complete vegan, you will miss out food you need to grow or be healthy, as for red meat,...........its okay...... not to eat.....
