Are you happy about the meat recall?!

Question: 143 million pounds of beef have been recalled. That is an exceptionally large amount of meat. I am thakful that the cattle industry is finally having to pay up, but why did it take WASTING the lives of 110,000 cows to bring this to light? I am happy that the meat industry is losing the income, I am happy that this was brought to light.

But, could the government have NAILED them without wasting the meat?

The USDA is notorious for being very slack with examinations. There's been cases were inspectors barely even breached a slaughter house's door, there are many instances where every step isn't examined, where the behind-the-scenes stuff isn't viewed.

It's possible that the government could have caught it, but unlikely that anything would have been done on this scale, considering that this happens all the time nationwide in slaughterhouses and is brought to light on and off. Thanksgiving 2006 there was a huge story about Butterball Turkeys and the despicable conditions, and that BARELY made it on to major news stations and there was no recall even though there was filmed evidence, worker testimonies, etc.

I think publicity, public outrage (the fact that close to 40 million pounds of this stuff was already fed to school children) and massive losses for the meat industry and slaughter houses responsible are all positive things. The fact that this is SO massive scale, so wide-spread and crosses many boundaries (served in schools, restaurants, sold in stores) is why the media HAS to cover it and why it's getting so much shock and attention.

doesn't affect me cuz i don't eat cow.

im happy in a way.. b/c more ppl will become vegetarian.
and yeah thats enough meat to feed every man women and child 2 hamburgers in the U.S.

Honestly, I'm glad because many people have been awakened to facts that many vegetarians have known all along.
As far as "wasting meat"...the cows (and other animals used for food) are my main concern. If they have to waste meat, so be it. The animals were diseased and would have had to have been destroyed anyway.

I do hope it makes more people stop and think about what they're putting in their bodies and the treatment of the animals killed for their food.

Unfortunately most of the beef has already been consumed. So they don't really have to pay anyone back except for some of the schools still recieving shipments.

Actually I'm not happy if anyone gets hurt.. but i am happy it will open up some peoples eyes to see what really goes on in a slaughter house.. Your meat does have eyes.. a heart.. and feels pain.. It does not come from just some radom grocery store.. it comes from places jut like those on the video around the world.

im glad that people finally realize the cruelty animals go through , i just wish that this could have happened without the wasting of the cows taking place.

I am a meat eater - but it breaks my heart that so many cattle were murdered for nothing.

If I was to own a ranch with cattle going to slaugterhouses, I would deffinately make sure they have a wonderful life leading up to their sacrifices. Just because they are bred to become someone's dinner doesn't mean they deserve less respect!

Are you happy about the meat recall?

No. It's terrible that all of that meat went to waste especially considering the fact there may have been absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I wonder is the bigger hypocrite, the one who eats meat or the one who implies she "cares" and yet is so happy for all the wasted food ? By the way, what did come to light? CAn you explain between jumps for joy?

Just in case you don't know by the way, the "beef industry" is made up of people. Outside the ranchers, the beef industry is made up of people with families to feed and despite your obvious ignorance about it, are not rich. to rejoice in the fact that the industry lost money and may have to lay off a lot of these folks is the height of hyp[ocracy for somebody who shouts out that she "cares". I could also be happy if you have an unfortunate meeting with a speeding bus but that would put me in the same level as you and frankly, I don't think I can bend that low.

I'm happy about it! Personally, I knew something fishy was going on with school meats anyway. I'm not sure if the government could have. They say that people probably won't be sick from it, but there's always that small chance. Sadly, that could have gone to people who really needed it. I'm not becoming vegan because of it though--it's only because I know that that company is being sued and they have to pay a large sum of money. The workers there were fired and hopefully that company will be inspected more often for humane conditions.

the fast food industry for many many years has glorified the burger....mass production, mass feedlots, growth hormones, grains additives, saw dust to make the cattle weigh more and bulk up.....

the meat producers of America, all of it has gotten so big that it is out of control and will collapse under its own weight of money and greed....

the land that is wasted in feeding these gigantic herds of cattle...1 acre can feed 40 people but 1 acre can't feed one cow....

it is the farmer who is the loser......and the sick and dieing consumer....

my husband and I both grew up on farms...we are vegetarian today...

the meat was wasted before the cow was butchered...it was contaminated with pesticides, growth hormones, chemicals, mad cow, radiation, etc...

and was going to our public schools and hospitals.....
