How do I tell my parents I'm a vegetarian?!

Question: I'm 15, and I became a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian in November 2007, and haven't told my parents. At meals, I would eat as slowly as possible so that when everybody left the table, I could go into the kitchen to dispose of the meat. Honestly, I'm tired of it. My mom's the kind of person who always want to be right, so if I tell her, she'll probably say, "What about nutrients and other vitamins?". I would explain, and she'd come up with something else to try to persuade me the other way. Like I said, I'm tired of lying to my parents. My dad would probably side with my mom. Is there any easier way to break it to them?

I think u better tell them frankly but politely, I've turned vegetarian . If they ask you just tell them the truth why you are.

You 've not eaten anything you should not eat. You are not eating something probably b'cause you don't like it.

Try to make them understand.I'am sure they will.

Regarding your mom's concern about vitamins and other nutrients , there are good substitutes for meat , like milk, all kinds of fruits and vegetables, cheeses, bread, etc.
Also eggs , if it is okay with you.

Regarding people's comments , don't worry about them.
Onlyy your family and your choice should matter to u.
Hope this helps.

"Mom, Dad, I'm vegetarian."

Seriously, though... your parents will be supportive if they know you're eating a diet that supports your health. So if you want their support and respect in terms of your vegetarianism, you need to live your life as a happy and healthy vegetarian. This means eating a well-planned balanced vegetarian diet.

Get thee to a bookstore and get yourself a copy of "Becoming Vegetarian" by Davis & Melina. It's everything you need to know about vegetarian nutrition. If your parents have doubts, give it to them to read... they can learn the facts for themselves.

Bottom line is that this is your decision, whether your parents like it or not. Be calm, be strong, and good luck!

tell them you're gay and have a communicable disease.

Then admitting to being a vegetarian won't seem half as bad will it?

Just tell them. Seriously. It's not going to break their hearts or anything. Just let them know your reasons why and do some research about why you don't really need meat in your diet to have it be well balanced.

Tell them that you have become a vegetarian for your health, the environment, and to help stop cruelty to animals...have them watch the video I am attaching...consider doing a report that shows them the benefits of a vegetarian diet...there are SO many benefits! I'm NOT a supporter of PETA but I will tell you that if you go to their website and download the vegetarian starter kit it will give you a ton of information as to why a vegetarian diet is so beneficial. Good luck!

Just tell them that your a vegetarian. They'll understand.

Dude im sick of meat to. Ok tell them if u could ease up on the meat and if that dosent work just try to beg it is risky to beg so tell them if they get mad that maybe it would be good to beg. Hope this works.

Do your research if you feel you need to defend your decision.

Consult a dietetican, nurse, doctor, nutritionist.
Use the internet.
They are your parents they will accept you as you are, so I wouldn't worry too much.

"Mom, Dad, I'm a vegetarian. Please pass the turnips."

Seriously, you are old enough to make this decision. Learn everything you can, (sources of protein, iron, etc.) tell them you will cook for yourself, (and clean up after) see if you can go to the grocery store with them to get some food you would like.

And do your homework and clean your room. Parents are more likely to respect your decisions if you show responsibility.

Get the book Becoming Vegetarian. It has tons of nutrition information, a section for the special needs of teens and advice on dealing with family and friends. Read through it and take the book when you tell your parents.

Honestly if your throwing out the meat it is just as bad as eating it. One day just don't take any meat at dinner and when they ask why you didn't take any meat explain to them that your a vegetarian and that you have been one since november.

Just want to second what the last post said about reading "Becoming Vegetarian". It's fascinating, and will help you make wise nutritional choices to get all the good stuff you need to thrive.

Best of luck! And remember, you only have to live under their rule for another three years, then you'll be able to live your own way, according to your own values.

you gotta do it straight up. i had the exact same problem as you had, even HARDER, my dads is a manager of KFC! but dw its really not that bad when you actually do it! just get up a whooole list of good reasons for being a vegeterian in your head to answer your parents questions, chances are you probably won't even need all of them.
