What can I do with fennel seeds?!
Answers: I saw some fennel seeds in a produce market and I bought them because I remembered reading somewhere that they were healthy. But now I don't know what to do with them! Does anyone have any good recipes for using them or tips for what to eat them with? What about planting some of them? Do you think they would grow in Central Florida's climate?
fennel seeds can be chewed by themselves, made into tea or used in cooking.
fennel has a nice black licorice flavor
health wise fennel is used to break up gas and to freashen breath
so you can chew a few seeds after a meal or like chewing gum
a cup of tea (1 tsp seeds to 1pot of water) will calm the stomach and aid in digestion, as well break up any gas bubbles.
or can be added to dishes with foods that are typically gassy
like boiled cabage, a couple seed added to the boiling water adds flavor and reduces gas.
fennel also works on colic in infants(diluted of course)
The feathery, green fronds can be used in flavouring salads and vegetables and especially for seafood dishes , it excels as the perfect compliment with salmon
I toss some in spaghetti sauce, adds a great and mysterious flavor! That little something that everyone notices, but can't put their finger on!
I just put fennel in a stir-fry with carrots and some other things.
I sometimes put toasted fennel seeds in salads. The spice is also good in tomato sauce for pasta. Fennel is an incredibly invasive weed in California so I would suspect it will grow if the seeds are not too old.
