thank you
Don't only look for meat substitutes, look for ways to incorporate protein into your diet.
Quinoa is a grain that contains a high amount of protein and minerals. It smells and tastes a little strange but is really versatile and a great source of protein.
Tempeh and Tofu are great to eat during meals but some people have a hard time with soy. They are also extremely versatile.
Beans, Seeds, Nuts, all important in a vegetarian diet. You have to make sure that you ingest enough fat as well as protein. Avocados are a good source of healthy fats. Look into some nutrition advice at the library. Check out a few books on vegetarian nutrition and also some recepies.
Tofu
There are a number of different vegetarian meat substitutes. I just bought my daughter this frozen "turkey" roll (not tofurky), that she said is wonderful. She made whole wheat stuffing and had it with that, and has it on a sandwich. But look in your market. If you have a Whole Foods near you, they have that frozen turkey there, and a good selection of other "meats". I love the Boca sausages.. yum. You need to look, shop and try a few things.
You're going vegan and giving up meat all at the same time? I would consider giving up meat first. Then dairy. That's a lot to take on all at once. Make sure you eat plenty of beans (chili dishes, and other recipes, hummus, etc.) and nuts, and make sure you take vitamins. And if your are giving up dairly, be sure to take a calcium +D supplement. You have to take vitamin D with calcium. You can usually buy the Calcium +D all in one tablet.
seitan, tempeh, tofu, beans, nuts
Try any of the Boca or Gimmelean products. The texture is pretty good and the flavor is nice. I eat meat regularly, but also substitute these often to cut down my meat intake. They work well and are pretty satisfying.
pulses rice
TVP!
It depends on what meat you're substituting for.
Morningstar Farms Burger Crumbles are good, as are their "Chik'n" patties, nuggets and tenders. Their breakfast sausage is good too.
There is also tofu, seitan, tempeh, tvp, etc.
