People are not necessarily meant to eat meat. Think about it: don't you get a bit queasy when you see bloody meat in the market? Or do you just want to rip the package open and tear through it with your teeth? Do you say "Gross!", or "Oh no!" when you see roadkill? Or maybe you salivate, pull over the car, and start eating it. I think that meat is a taste we acquire. As goveg.com argues, carnivorous animals (not including humans) eat meat, but do not get heart disease or coronary diseases as a result of this. But why do we? Well, it seems as if our systems were not build for this consumption. Also, here are some other reasons.

1. Animals do suffer at pack-houses. Go to meetyourmeat.com and you will see this suffering. They are injected with growth hormones that they cannot handle, and their legs break (think of Arnold Schwarzenegger with skinny legs) sometimes. They are put into tiny cages that they typically share (depending on the animal.) The way they execute the animal if they are inadequate is absolutely horrendous: it ranges from slamming them unto the floor to inadequately breaking their necks. Wouldn't you rather they be able to range the ideal farmland with the wind blowing in their feathers/ fur and grass under their feet?

2. End world hunger. For every 15 pounds of vegetables, there is only one pound of meat produced. Think of 4 hamburger patties vs. 5 (3 pound) bags of carrots: which would feed more people?

3. Your health. Vegans are 4 times less likely to be obese than meat eaters. There is less chance of canger, heart disease, diabetes, and a whole array of diseases affecting Americans today.

4. Global warming. Ever heard of the effects of cow poop?

5. If animals ceased to be treated like tasty confections, and we were able to research them (humanely), then we could discover more about the intricate world of the animal. Did you know chickens are nearly as smart as monkeys? They anticipate the future, have a culture, and are very curious and inquisitive.

I hope this changed your opinions. Check out these sites.

actually our bodies werent designed to digest meat

it just rots in you intestines

I don't see how "because animals suffer" is an 'excuse' it is a very good reason to not eat meat.
Other benefits, or 'excuses' as you might call them include lower risk of some diseases and other health benefits and environmental reasons.

people become vegans because they dont like the idea of killing animals, but mostly because of the bad treatment they get while captivated. but we are cutting down on chicken cruelty. as for are bodies, we were made to be omnivores, and we would be dead if we wernt. we need the protein and other stuff in there, and if we didnt kill animals more would die, because there wouldnt be enough food, plus we would be eating it to. and if we let the animals free from zoo's and food farming, they would die, because they have no instinct. but even so, dont eat micky dee's, you dont wanna know how they make there food.....uhhhhhhhhh.

Some people are vegetarians and vegans because of the health benefits. It's not necessary to eat meat to be healthy, and recent research suggests that vegetarian diets are even healthier than meat-based ones. For example:

The American Dietetic Association (one of the nation's leading experts on nutrition) states: "Vegetarians have been reported to have lower body mass indices than nonvegetarians, as well as lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; vegetarians also show lower blood cholesterol levels; lower blood pressure; and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer. "

A 2007 study of more than 35,000 women published in the British Journal of Cancer found that women who ate the most meat were more likely to develop breast cancer than women who consumed the lowest amount of meat.

A major study published in February 2005 reconfirmed the link between meat consumption and heart problems. The study, which was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, concluded that among the 29,000 participants, those who ate the most meat were also at the greatest risk for heart disease.

I kinda think your question is a bit offensive to vegetarians... (vegans are vegetarians who also don't eat any type of animal by-products, which would include dairy products). Not all vegetarians are vegan. I'm not vegetarian, but I can answer that questin First of all, I think you probably meant to ask, "Why be vegetarian?"

It's called "choice". We all have a choice. I am not vegetarian, but I absolutely respect others' choices not to eat meat. There are many reason people choose not to eat meat. For many it's about animal rights and cruelty and the way they are raised and slaughtered. For some it's for health reasons... a choice not to eat meat either out of necessity or for their own health reasons. I know not all vegetarians are respectful of my choice to eat meat. But I will never be critical of their choice.

Personally, I'm a little fussy about which meats I eat because of they way some animals are slaughtered. So there are some meats I don't eat, and I eat a fair amount of non-meat "meat" products.

Anyway... to me, it's about choice and respect. Most people are honest about the choice they made to be vegetarian... it's not an excuse as you seem to think.

I am a meat eater. I find the lack of intellect in your question to be offensive.

You are certainly entitled to you opinion. And I am entitled to mine: you're wrong.

At least offer something to back up your assertion. *Why* were people meant to eat meat? (I don't think "because god said so" to "because they always have" is an excuse.)

I am veg*n because we have lower risk of heart attack and stroke, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, less risk of diabetes, less chance of becoming obese, reduced risk of colon cancer, reduced risk of kidney disease. We also live 6-10 years longer. Science backs this up, unlike your statement.

I am also veg*n because, as we saw with the Westland/Hallmark debacle this last week, when people treat animals as a commodity, bad things happen. Those animals do not deserve to be treated the way they were. Would you think that sort of treatment was OK if it was puppies in the video? Also, millions of pounds of beef was not recalled "because animals suffer." It was recalled because there was evidence that Westland/Hallmark was selling dirty, diseased, unsafe meat to American schoolchildren. I don't support that kind of treatment of animals OR kids.

I am also veg*n because animal agriculture is a leading cause of global climate change and is a shameless waste of resources. I am veg*n because I believe it's morally unconscionable to mow down thousands of acres of irreplaceable Central American rainforest so that greedy Americans can have cheap fast food hamburgers.

You don't have to agree with any of it. I'm not trying to pry the cheeseburger out of your hands. But do yourself a favor and inform your opinions. Read "Fast Food Nation" for a start. If you don't care about the animals, read "The China Study" and learn why cutting out animal foods is in YOUR best interest. Or, you know, just leave us alone because we're not hurting you.

why be a vegan....?

Because that's what they want to do. They don't need your permission nor your blessing. People have a choice. You must feel guilty about your's or else you wouldn't be here defending yourself to complete strangers.

Mockingbird---what happened? You used to give good answers and now all you do is spout unfounded propaganda.

People are meant to spell too. If people were "meant" to eat meat, they would be equiped with sharp claws, a mouth full of canine teeth, and the ability to hunt, catch, capture, kill, and consume their prey raw without the use of tools, like other carnivorous animals do. The argument that we have "evolved" to use tools doesn't hold up very well-if that were the case, we would have "evolved" to eat meat raw. Instead, humans must cook their meat, because their bodies are poisoned by the parasites and bacteria in raw meat-which means we are NOT meant to eat it. The two tiny little incisor teeth we have does NOT equip us to "rip and tear" flesh. The majority of our teeth are flat, like other vegetarian animals. A human is designed perfectly to tend to a garden-with an imposable thumb capable of picking fruits and vegetables. The fact that animals suffer horribly in confinement for meat is just one element of the equation. Human digestive systems do not digest meat well, and it causes a host of health issues. You CAN get ALL of the nutrients you need from a plant based diet. Many people think vegetarians do not get adequate protein and B vitamins, when in fact, a well balanced, plant based diet will provide all of those nutrients naturally. The B vitamins that you get from meat, come to the animal in THEIR food-their feed is supplemented with it. Animals do not produce B12 naturally, any more than humans do. However, B12 is present in many vegetables, grains, and other plant sources. If you take the time to do the proper research and homework on the issue, then you will realize that humans are not "meant" to eat meat. Most just do because thats the way they were raised to think about food. Most people eat meat because it comes neatly packaged in a grocery store-if people had to catch, kill and butcher animals for meat, there would be plenty more vegetarians in the world. Yes, there are hunters that do, but the MAJORITY of people could not do it. I certainly couldn't. I have no problem going to my garden though, and plucking up the ingredients for a nice meal-with no bloodshed, parasites, or bacteria involved. Nothing needs to die in order for me to sustain myself. My vegetable and fruit plants do not die when I pick their fruit-they just grow more.

ACTUALLY...

-The saliva of carnivores is acidic.
-They also have much shorter intestines so that they can expel meat before it rots inside them.
-They have tough claws to assist in killing animals/ripping up meat.

On the flip side...

-Human saliva is alkaline [not for breaking up meat].
-Our intestines are a lot longer and meat doesn't digest quickly/easily/effectively, therefore spending time rotting inside you.
-We do not have tough claws, we have meagre little fingers with flimsy nails. We simply evolved, created weapons and barbarically destroyed other species just because we could/can.

Pleasant, isn't it?

No, we are not "meant" to eat meat.

Hang on -- I get thumbs down for giving you guys FACTS to answer the question? How ridiculous.

If anyone would like to put forward a rebuttal to my answer, please go ahead and do so - and explain why, with facts, not ignorance.

Why does it matter to you? We can live the way we want.

"I am a meat eater. I find the lack of intellect in your question to be offensive."

haha, best answer ever!

NOT TRUE

Humans can live eatting animal flesh & deal with the repercussions of doing so. Early death, Cancer, Heart Disease, Auto Immune disease & more. But Humans THRIVE on a plant based diet.

Slainté (to your health)

You don't think "because animals suffer" is an excuse? Why because you don't care if animals suffer? That is pretty dang heartless, I don't know any meat eater nor have met one that cares that little about animal suffering. No offense? I think you offended a lot of people, obviously meat eaters too. You better hope there isn't reincarnation, with that attitude you will come back as an animal in a factory farm.

Its just they're way of life.

i agree, plants also die so we can eat them.

but everyone is different. i was raised vegetarian and even though i've tried, i don't digest meat, so i stick with what works for me. my dad on the other hand was a vegetarian for thirty years and started adding meat to his diet after i encouraged him to follow his gut instinct (no pun intended) and he thrives on it. meat works great for a lot of people, other people not so much. isn't variety great?

We aren't ''meant'' to eat meat or any other particular food. ''Meant'' by whom? Eating or not eating meat is a choice, and it doesn't need an 'excuse'.

If you want a reason (not an excuse) - I'm vegan because I choose to minimise my personal contribution to animal suffering and exploitation. You don't think that's a good reason, fine. I don't demand that you think like me; do me the same courtesy

Neither do I have the slightest interest in what you eat; why are you fretting about other people's diets?

Edit*If you had been 'trying to learn about new ideas' you would have worded your question very differently.
::

who are you to say that humans are meant to eat meat??
humans have flesh/meat... does that mean humans are "supposed" to eat each other?

yes, actually because the animals suffer is an excellent excuse. wake up and realize it. people do it for their health, for the environment and for moral reasons.

P.S. learn how to spell.

to be healthy...we are not carnivores, we dont have sharp teeth or claws, or the digestive system for it. do you ever wonder why your body is so tired after eating meat? bc it takes over 24 hrs to digest meat...so when you poop, that is why it stinks bc the meat inside you has rottened and it comes out smelling like that. gross.
and animals suffer is a valid excuse. have you ever been to a slaughter house? they dont just kill them, they torture them. it is morally wrong and insane. people love animals and would do anything for them..like not eat them!
do more research and you will realize yourself why it is bad

i don't think "becuase animals sufer" is an excuse either.

but i think "because animals suffer" is a good one. why don't you think that's a good "excuse"? we don't need to eat meat. at all. so not everyone is okay with the idea of animal that feels pain the same as we do being tortured abused and suffering just so they can eat something they don't really need. we are definately not meant to eat meat at all in the quantities we do. and there's enough products out there to get all the protein and nutrients you need with out any meat. i cannot eat something that is a dead animal and on top of that the dead animal was tortured and suffered and in pain and treated so cruelly for all it's short miserable life. why? why would i want to inflict such pain?

You are stupid. People are NOT ment to eat meat.

You are right. We are all omnivores. Eating lean meat in moderation is very healthy.
