New Vegatarian Questions?!

Question: I have decided to become vegetarian and have been since this year. Not a long time I know, but I love all animals and plan to stick with this for as long as I live. I just want to know if there are any foods that I might think are OK to eat but aren't. Like cheese, my friend said it has something from a cow (NOT the milk!) in it, but it isn't listed in the ingredients.

McDonalds claims (I'm in New Zealand) that the fries are cooked in vegetable oil and no animal fat, should I believe them?

Good on ya for making the switch to veg. like the other girls said, some cheeses contain animal rennet (usually cow's stomach bile). I'm from Aus and i'm pretty sure Maccas has switched to canola oil for frying. But most other take away places still fry in tallow or lard (which is animal fats).

The dairy cows are treated horribly. They impregnate them over and over and over again until the cows can't do it anymore. Their babies are taken away from them quickly after birth and the cows mourn for their babies. Then they are shipped off to the slaughterhouse. Some cheeses have rennent in them.

RENNET is the ingredient you are looking for in cheese
see here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennet
but there are lots of vegetarian cheeses without, and they will tell you on the packaging whether its suitable for vegetarians or not
well done to you, it will become less daunting as time goes on

I am work as a crew in McDonald's before.
For sure they are using vegetable oil for the fries.
If you compare the fries with other fast food , McDonald's most delicious for me. Furthermore , my colleague are vegetarian , when they go McDonald's they just order fries , mc egg ,drinks , and desserts.

If the cheese contains rennet it will be listed on the ingredients.

Rennet is comprised of enzymes from a calf's stomach- calves who have been slaughtered for veal.

McDonald's fries are cooked in vegetable oil.

Most cheese has rennet, which is from a veal calf's stomach, harvested upon slaughter.

The issue with McDonald's fries these days is not whether there is animal fat in the oil but if there is animal product in the "natural flavoring" ingredient of the fry itself.

In England the fries are certified by the vegetarian society to be vegetarian while in the USA they are not. I am thus far unable to find info. on New Zealand.

Well, they McDonald's fries are cooked in veggie oil NOW because a Vegan man sued... ;)
and no gummy Lifesavers, Jell-o, there are some pies with gellatin in them I heard, um... oh I also heard that Starbucks Frappicinos aren't vegetarian.

I'm like you, I've been wondering what I can eat and I can't

Congrats with the switch!

Im a vege too.

McDonalds is horrible and does cook in animal fat, which is why it's dispised by most veges like me.
Also, why would you want ot eat it, It is completley unhealthy.

Did you know that 2 hamburgers and a small fries increases your chances of getting diabites or a heart problem dirastically?.
